Rover Sill corrosion

Recommended Posts

Hi all , my Rover 45 has finally lost the battle against corrosion near the front jacking point. The larger hole is there from factory , it has got bigger due to corrosion. How fixable do you think this is ? It's a known weak spot in the 400/45. The sill cover must trap water against the sill.

My 75 is starting to go a bit bubbly there too. Will need looked at next year.

Hasn't been welded before there. It appears to be double skinned/laminated.

The more you tap it the more welding there will be.

Easy to stick a large plate over the lot.

More difficult if you have to repair any possible damage behind.

Is there rust in other places? Is the MOT due shortly?

Passed the MOT a few weeks ago. Had a repair in the inner arch two years ago

That has 100% been welded before - you can see the underseal brush mark above it

That will be from me a couple of years ago. I applied some rust converter ,zinc primer and underseal.

Yep, I know about this. The rear part of both sills on my KV6 Sterling has simply fallen off.

That's not a major piece of welding for someone who knows what they're doing

Thanks for the replies. I will get it sorted between now and the next MOT.

I don't have anything to contribute to this thread, it just had a title I felt compelled to click on.

Solidarity bro.

More rust discovered ! This time on the rear of the offside sill. This looks a little more involved to repair compared to the other side. What do you think? It would poke through with a prod with a screwdriver.

That doesn't look a complicated repair to do on the face of it.  Clean back, chop out the rot, bosh a small flat plate in, job-jobbed.  If you'd left the sill cover on you probably wouldn't have known until it was terminal so now's a good time to get it done.

Where are you based? There's a welder in Sheffield who does MOT type welding really reasonably, he'd charge buttons for that.
