Mk1 Escort wanted

Anyone on here hiding an Escort Mk1 in their fleet? I'm seeking one for a feature. I'd prefer a non RWD GR8 4 DRIFTING ZETEC INNIT RS LOOK-ALIKE if possible. So a bog standard 1100 estate would be ideal.

Drop me a line at [email protected] if you can help. We need to drive it, so it must be road ready. Super-clean Concours is not a requirement but death traps need not apply.

Speak to Mk14dr on RetroRides, he has a nice Mk1....

Hmmm. Might be a bit 'boy racer' for our needs. I'd like something with bumpers. And normal ride height (though I admire him greatly for ignoring the "oooh, it's got to be a two door" crowd!)

Jesuz, that is horrid!Where have all the nice Mark 1 Escorts gone?

In what way is that a 'nice' Mk1?
Posted

Bit of a snap judgement that, I get to see it fairly often and it's a top-class motor and a daily driver at that. Also mk14dr is also on this forum, so he might thump you or something.

Ok, maybe I over-reacted but whats with the multiple round holes on the front valance? - surely you only need one for the starting handle. :D

Because it's a bit different, is in nice nick, doesn't pretend to be a Mexico or RS2000 and looks a million time nicer in real life.

Also, not that if effects whether you like the car or not, Mr (and Mrs) Mk14dr are top people.

Yeah don't forget Mrs mk14dr, she'll thump you as well. You're in for a hiding!

Hmmm, I doubt that very much. Look at the minty little E30 next to it and the Mark 3 Ghia behind. If it was in that kind of condition, it would be 'nice'. That one reminds me of the sort of Escort my Mates had at college circa 1984.But to each their own.

I'm liking that BMW E30 next to it, a two door chrome bumper on steelies thats in good nic and that hasn't been messed with is becoming a rare sight-I'm sure these will become like the Mk1/2 ezzers in due course/very near future.

You're not the first to say that. The Paddies are already paying mental money for nice 2 door E30's - nostalgia is a wonderful thing.

That and what else do you buy thats fairly compact and RWD for the money that can also handle being used as a daily?

Were you one of those naysayers on the display stand from the Morris Minor OC at Cholmondeley? Seriously, Dave's car isn't a minter but it is a long bloody way from being a tarted up pile of shit. Bodily it is a lot sounder than some of these so called bollocks concours show and shine jobs. You can't keep a car in show spec and use it as a DD. It's one of the few old cars I know of with genuine patina, not some sprayed on ankor wax shite or polished to within a millimetre of its life and driven on grass once every 6 months.Plus it drives really well. I know that because I've driven it.Yeah, it's different but not exactly hideous. That E30 was in very good condition - in the traditional sense.Seriously, if you don't like Dave's car, don't look at my Amazon - you'd fucking hate it. Best steer clear of Paul H's 222S as well. He does this thing with it called 'driving'.

Bugger all. Now is the time to buy one - I reckon another 4 years and there will be expensive cars, and cheap rubbish....with nothing in between.

Thats normal and not just restricted to cars, good cars that are sought after will as we all know appreciate with age sometimes by a staggering amount depending on the two main factors of supply and demand. Only when the good stuff is way out of reach to the masses will the dross bodged up with wag start to sell for decent money you've only got to look at Escorts and VW Campers to learn any lessons about in-demand fashionable classics.Anyway I'm sure dollywobbler would like us to continue with his original topic.

Indeed - I'm after an Escort, not "oooh, that blue one is crap!" comments. Each to their own but I'm after a car, not opinion. Now, back to normal service eh folks? :D

I don't agree.I had a 1976 Escort Mexico Mark 2 20 years ago, and like all 12 year old Escorts they were mainly crusty old heaps even then. I bought it as a shitheap with a blown engine and rotten wings. I replaced the inner and outer rear arches, fitted new wings, two perfect doors and colour changed it from Signal green to Diamond white with red decals. I bought a low mileage 2 litre Sierra engine, fitted single leaf springs and 2.8i Capri struts so it went and handled properly. I built the whole car for £1000 and it looked stunning over the two years and 20'000 miles I used it. With plenty of Waxoyl and care it lasted well and was on the road until 5 years ago when it was exported (I wonder where....).No, I'm not into concours. To me it's like being a frustrated housewife but if you have nothing better to do than clean a car with a toothbrush then so be it. I have a mate seriously into concours and the who concours scene is very unhealthy as far as I am concerned.Yes, you CAN have an old car as a daily driver that looks really nice. You do that thing with it called 'maintenance'. :D

Hmmm, interesting thread  Ian, I can see why you'd not want mine on your pages, its not exactly stock as a rock. However, Im not sure how the opinions have been reached on the strength of one pic that its some sort of wagged up, tarted up shed. My car ain't 'hanging' (or what ever the cool kids call rot-boxes now-a-days), it is however a work-in-progress that also happens to live out on the street, take me to work and back everyday and cart me an my good lady all over the country. Also, I don't think theres too many mk1's that have done 30k in the last 3yrs but I will stand corrected.Shoot, until I read this I was thinking mine was looking the smartest it has since Ive owned it, however I might have slightly tinted glasses on when I go out to it in the morning now...John, Hirst, Cavette, thanks for the kind words, and Seth, erm 'thanks' for the pic

Thanks Mk1. A little more stock and we'd've been very interested!

So Paul and I don't maintain our cars then? Bollocks. Paintwork goes off if you use the car every day regardless of weather, unless you live in some bizarre parallel universe where the car is immune to corrosion. I don't care how well protected the car is.Dave has had new inner and outer sills on the car, the floorpan is sound and so is the engine bay and boot. Want to retract that statement, being that I've actually SEEN the fucking thing in the flesh?I still don't understand how you can declare Dave's car as a pile of shit off the strength of one photograph. What I think is that you've decided that you don't like it because of the front end or the colour, and have then decided to lump it in with the OSF lot, who, believe it or not, despite having strange taste in modifying and an unhealthy obsession with 'stance' actually maintain their cars as well! You've correlated 'used daily' with 'completely neglected thrashed piece of shit' because that Escort leans more towards OSF than standard. I have no time for the 'OMG slammed' brigade, or the OSF and VW 'scenes' but whether you like it or not most of them look after their cars. We're not going to see eye to eye on this, but believe it or not we're on the same side of the fence. On the beadle however Ian, I can ask a bloke near work who has a Mexico if you want. That has all the shiny bits that undoubtedly make a car great on the strength of one viewing but I fear perhaps it might be too sporty for your remit.

Thanks. Could be useful if nothing else works out. I'm running out of time really. Whereabouts is work?

Fair way unfortunately, it's in Heald Green, which is in Cheshire [just], very close to Manchester Airport.

I know a chap who has a really tidy H-reg 1300 XL four door - completely standard and as should be if you get desperate. He's in the Hull area and has a number of other classics.PM me if needed.

I said I think it's horrid. I stand by that comment and I would be of the same opinion if I were to see it in the flesh. An old four door Escort with big holes in the front panel and no bumpers doesn't do it for me. I haven't put in any doubt how solid it is, or how well it drives. I didn't say it's 'a pile of shit' so please don't misquote me. They were your words, not mine.
