I haven't a clue what this old car is

Can anyone enlighten me please?

I'd guess it's a Riley or a Standard. I didn't want to creep right up to it after papping it.

HYX 986 was first registered on Wednesday 16th of April 1947 near London. At an estimated 58,591 miles, this car has done a lower than average number of miles for it's age. This car had 3 previous owners before the current keeper acquired it.It was painted black previously.

you can buy a print of it here:

But while googling inevitably found this (yawn), when did 'tattoo'd lady leaning on old car in 1940's clothes' become such a thing!

Thank you Sigmund & John. :-)

My knowledge of pre 1960s cars is sketchy.

IIRC, the RMA was only ever made with round instruments. It was the "facelifted" RME that had four rectangular auxiliary gauges between the large, round speedo and clock.

Without looking at the engine, I don't think there's any way of knowing if it's the 1.5 or the 2.5. Certainly the larger engine would be the best as they are quite substantial cars with a separate chassis and traditional coachwork.

It is a Riley RM, it looks as if the badge is dark blue which would make it a 1 1/2 litre RMA as opposed to the  2 1/2 litre RMB which had a light blue badge (as I'm sure that we all know ;)  ) The fact that I spent today at the excellent Coventry Transport Museum, where they have a slightly later RME model is completely irrelevant :) BTW if the registation is HYX 988 then it is a London Series from 1947; that information comes from the Old Classic Car site, which is highly recommended.

Hi, if you go on the gov site it tells you it's 1496cc, The 2 1/2 litre version is longer in the bonnet to accommodate the bigger engine.

I restored this Riley RMA HYX 986 from taking ownership as barn find in 2003 to roadworthy and sale in 2006. Good to see that it is still in good shape when the above photos were taken.  I have a few covering restoration.
