Stainless Self-tapping screw - Hex

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have to have a dozen of the above for the Daf.

The hex head is for a 10mm socket, the width of the screw is 5mm and the length looks to be around 12mm, give a mm or so.

Bit confused as to what I need to order. Anyone know of a decent supplier?

Fanks.

Get on the talking bone to

They sell nuts, bolts, screws   errr that's it almost, and any quantity even one M6 nut.     If they have what you desire tell me and I'll pop in (strangely they know me) and pick them up/post them when I go there next to get even more bolts for rusty 205 suspensions.

Sat down and worked out the measurements properly. Never do this at stupid o'clock in the morning.

Sorted. Thanks everyone.

A bit late to the party here but as mentioned by lisbon_road try ebay first for small quantities, then Anglia Stainless who sell stainless stuff for all makes, not just Ford Anglias

if it helps, i have always known what i think youre describing, as a tec screw (sp?)  not sure if that helps in any way?

Cheers, hopefully the ones I've bought will be correct lol.

Tec screw, not heard that one before but am always happy to be educated.

The front panel on the 66 is very rusty (surface rust), easier to fit the much less rusty one provided by Essex Dafs.

The fasteners on the 66 are goosed and whoever thought that using large Phillips headed non-stainless self-tappers was a good idea was at best shit-faced when making that choice.

They will be replaced by hex headed items in stainless, together with lots of copper grease.

i was mistaken - it is TEK screw.  theyre like a self drilling self tapping hex head screw.  not seen any in stainless though.

Also known as Acme bolts.......the front end of my Chevy is held together them........70s/80s Cortina and Granada wings were held on with them......they turn up everywhere!

Last ones I got were from local factors.....£4.50 for 25

Maybe because stainless won't take as much torque as mild steel, its quite easy to twist the head off a self tapper.

Guess what? I ordered the wrong ones. What a shocker. The ones that I bought are much smaller. Useful still elsewhere, but too smoll.

M6 is a 10mm spanner fit isn't it?

Meant to add that the original hex headed self-tappers secure the front panel sides to the front wings.

Usually, unless it's not. Some manufacturers, especially japanese ones, like giving things nonstandard heads so only one or two spanner sizes are needed.

Thankfully everything else that I ordered is correct.

Ok, back now from the poncey beans and here is my considered view.

There appears to be three different screws holding that valance panel (20) on and all the self-tappers screw into these sort of clips:

"Speed Fasteners U Nuts Self Tapping Screw Spire U Clips" which are readily available in zinc-plated steel, but I've not seen them in stainless. This is going to be something to think about as a stainless screw in only going to replace half the rust.

You could ditch those u-clips for the the more threaded ones that will take normal Bolty McBoltface threads:

"Speed Fastener Chimney U Clips"

Or ditch the whole lot and join the two parts together with something corrosion-proof - I'm thinking plastic expanding trim clips that'll do the job of holding two panels together firmly. Something like pushy/screwy in the middle:

Fanks for the diagram, much helpings generally.

I have fixing 27 in stainless, so that should no longer be an issue, plus hex headed as well for additional levels of happiness.

It is fixing number 16 that is the problem one. Helpfully the Daf info just says........ 'bolt' lol.

Is 13 and 14 available anywhere do you know?

I'll have a look in the shed, those 14s are always brittle and broken. :(
