Riviera Rammel: chod spotting at the Monaco GP

Recommended Posts

I managed to blag a trip down to the Monaco GP with work. Still not really sure how I swung that one, but it happened. There was lots of expensive stuff, supercars, lots of birds with fake fake tits and a race. Fuck all that highballing shit though, I had chod to spot and there was a good amount of chod around to spot.

I was staying just outside Monaco in France. After a few beers on the first night I got the train back and realised that the town I was staying in was rammed full of quality junk. Good bit of strong sun down there means most older cars have a good dose of skin cancer but generally no rust despite not being looked after.

Decided to wait until daylight to have a better explore because the streetlights were making the pics a funny colour.

View from my hotel window was the first thing I posted on Facebook:

It wasn't long until someone commented there was a Renault 6 in the carpark. I didn't even notice there was a carpark until they said it, so I zoomed in on the pic:

Looks pretty fucked. Win. Went down for a closer look!

The car was actually in pretty mint condition and wearing fake patina. Stripped out, plastic windows, bucket seats and harnesses, tow straps and those shagged wheels. Monaco plates made this more interesting to me. Good start.

Baked-on bird shit was a fairly common occurence, as sported by this Twingo:

The strong sun made it quite hard take good pictures, which is sad because this Astra was absolutely mint inside and out and the pic doesn't do it justice:

Panda wearing obligatory local bird poo:

Into Monaco itself. Friday before the race everybody started arriving in town, so all the supercars and exotica were appearing. And these Spanish guys, about 5 in total but I didn't get the camera out in time:

Down on the track where it's actually a road was this 80s (I think) Roller:

Behind that is the pits, another section of track (Rascasse?) and then the harbour front. This is where all the big yachts moor up for the weekend:

...though it was quite funny seeing an immaculate 7-figure yacht being loaded with cheap beer from a bashed up 3-figure Renault:

More to come in a bit...

If you ever go to Monaco for whatever reason, it's definitely worth visiting the private car collection of the deceased Prince Rainier III. There's a couple of old F1 cars in there, lots of vintage stuff, old Ferraris, rally cars and, somewhat surprisingly, a fair bit of immaculate bland shite which I didn't manage to snap as proof.

€6.50 to enter and these were the highlights for me.

R5 rally car, belonged to famous driver:

Ferrari F50 - never seen one in these. That's an Apple iPhone interpretation of Rosso Red:

This Lambo was just the absolute pits. Reasonably late one with full American rubber bumper spec and matching jacked up suspension. I don't think you could buy a more horrible Countach!

And finally this Healey. These are so rare and I never thought I'd ever actually see one, especially with this front end on. Loved it:

Bit more to come, in a bit...

Right. Last lot...

Some kind of proof that it was actually Monaco and I'm not just making all this up:

I saw a couple of stacklight Mercs floating around but I wasn't quite quick enough to get a pic of any of them. Luckily, the best one I saw was sat outside one of the swanky hotels down near the beach. Would:

Last pic I'm going to need some help with. Saw it in a heavily guarded compound where some VIP vehicles were parked and I sneaked in. This was as close as I got before I was chased out by an armed cop. Not joking either! I can't quite make out the badge. What is it, anyone know?

In that case that is exactly the Countach AS should buy in its next crowdfunding drive...

Rather than 'fake patina' on that R6 I would say it looks like someone shit in their hand and smeared it all over the car. The filthy animals.

Nearly getting shot for spots. Doing it right!

I reckon it's an Abarth with Zagato body. Could be Fiat or Simca-based.

Interesting sights there. Not initially the sort of place you'd think where our sort of stuff might be seen, but I suppose ordinary folk have to live there to service the Rich/Beautiful People.

One of my Flickr contacts is down from that way and he certainly finds some impressive old things. Survival rate probably better than the areas of France than I visit?

Lucky bastard and great spots

Amused me when watching the high performance parade on the telly that the 7-figure yachts in the Harbour are quite smol compared to the stuff just offshore, presumably because they cannot get them any closer.

then further observations found that all the bigger yachts offshore all looked exactly them same as each other. no clear winners in the pissing contest there.

One yacht was more of a smol Liner though so clear winner was found. Imagine spended all that wod and some bastard rocks up in a bigger one that yours lol.

I reckon maximum winnage would be awarded to anyone rocking up in a Mk2 Freeman Cruiser 22' my mate "channel hopped" in one so I reckon on the med being a piece of piss

Bubbly arse makes it a Zagato-bodied Fiat-Abarth 750.

I wasn't sure if those bigger boats anchored up offshore were private or if they were actual cruise liners bringing people in for the weekend as part of their cruise event. Certainly quite a few of those ones in the harbour were hospitality boats, not privately owned. You could spot the private ones because they were often on the move.

But yeah, imagine if you'd shelled out a load of dough to show off for the weekend being a wideboy on a hospitality boat in the harbour only to find the boat next to your one was much better, e.g. the one in the middle there with the spa on the top deck! Well where's your fucking spa then? I did actually feel a bit sorry for them!

Excellent!   Is that Marzal still in the Prince's bunker?   Wouldn't mind a gander at that one day.

Don't know why those cars should seem out of place. If I was rich enough to have a yaught and an apartment in Monaco then, for sure, I would have a Simca and a Renault 6 as well!

R6 has been molested by the riviera equivalent of RATLOOKLOLZ!!11one! twats. It looks eminently reversible so preferable to it being cubed.
