focus repeated rear bearing fails

mk1 focus , while back i put drums on it with ready fitted bearings , lasted 18 months 

 

i thought mustve been shite bearings so ordered a pair of fags and fitted them , nut wanged up to specified torque and now theyre sloppy again less than 6 months 

 

is there some kind of magic trick to doing these or am i unlucky?   ive fitted several bearings to past cars and had no issues

Is the inner seal and the metal ring ok ? Metal. So sealing well ?

And what torque are you using ?

And are you pressing on the outer race when fitting?

pulled the new ones in with threaded bar and an old race pushed against the outer race , from memory something around 175 ft lbs 

 

theyre not noisy just sloppy

I thought you needed a 10 ton press to successfully press these bearings in?

 

It is a weakness on them though, reckon on no more than 50k from a rear wheel bearing on one of these.

fitted just like any other rear one...moderate force needed nothing crazy

 

cant really see i did anything wrong , but they cant have done 3-4k miles

On my mates I noticed the stub axles were pretty worn.

Any evidence of misalignment on the tyres?

If the stub is bent then it'll wear the bearings,but will do the tyre 1st

tyres fine...same both sides

My mate had a late model Escort estate and that knocked out rear bearings in about 5000 miles.

 

Maybe due to the full snap off tool chest he used to cart around while the towbar bounced off the ground.

 

Don't you carry any weight?

 

In the boot of the car I mean.

nah only normal loads 

 

swapped em today with skf ones , old ones were still tight , no signs of water getting in just some light wear on the outer races

See if you can get hold of some Timken bearings for it. Best on the planet........except for those Russian ones........whose name escapes me.
