Wiper Arms And The Removal Of - Impossible

I need new wiper arms for my old Civic and whatever I have tried I cannot get the existing ones off.

 

I even bought one of those Laserline-type removal tools and still no joy.

 

They just will not budge.

 

Am I missing something obvious here?

 

Any hints or tips, dudes?

Penetrating oil, gentle taps with a hammer and lever the underside gently while pulling.

I've got a puller which looks like a small two leg puller, I put tension on it and leave it tight nd then carefully heat it with a blowtorch and the expansion whilst under tension pops it off

I had the same trouble on my Z3 when I changed the wiper linkage.and bought the special tool..

 

I unbolted the arms but I kept the bolts in place on the last couple of threads (as you don't want the wiper arms coming clean off and damaging the windscreen or bonnet) then I soaked them in 3 in 1 oil and a bit of plus gas over night before using the puller again with the help from the odd tap from a rubber mallet and it worked for me.

 

I found that once the arms initially breakaway from the rusted tread then it's done and they come off easy then.

Spray WD40 on the thread and put the bolt back on just a little bit so you don't smack anything when you free the arms, then just tug on the old arms until they come off. It's what I did a few months back with no other tools.

A wiggle can help, otherwise you end up pulling the arm in a manner that isn't straight up.

I've had 2 bastard arm jobs now.

 

The Zafira before we owned it, amys sister went to the safari park and lost the arm. No bother I said, cheap ebay wiper arm, ill fit it... 45 minutes later having used my largest bearing puller and a hammer it came off! (that's bitten me in the arse now as the blades fallen apart and the arm isn't actually a Zafira one so I need to just buy another arm.

 

The gooners rear wiper was the same. I ended up tearing the arm off the metal bush, then another 25 minutes with the bearing puller had it off, but I had the added fun of trying not to tear the tailgate glass latch off so couldn't pull too hard, plus because the wiper arm spindle passes through said glass, couldn't give it many beans!

 

I don't like removing wiper arms...

How old is the Civic, and do you know how long the arm has been on there for?

 

You may find the wiper blade is (very shit) ally, and the bolt holding it to the car is steel as they have reacted and fused together. I had this on one of my 800s! In the end I had to put some heat on it, and it came off with a lot of swearing and a very frustrated Partridge.

 

So be careful about putting too much penetrating oil on it if that is the case.

 

Although setting fire to your car while trying to change a wiper arm is the kind of crap that normally goes on around here.

Use a kettle of boiling water to heat it up rather than a blowtorch. Although it's only 100deg the speed that a part parts absorb heat from water is so rapid it's really effective. Particularly good for releasing bearings from alloy housings or indeed an alloy wiper arm off a steel shaft. Have the puller on and would up first before pouring the water on for maximum effect.

Just extend the arms into the 'car washing position'

 

Remove nuts

 

Give them a wiggle

Undo nut til flush on the end of the spindle get a small / medium pair of water pump pliers and put one jaw on the end of the sprindle/ nut and one under the wiper arm . Apply pressure and twat the back of the upper jaw of the pliers with a hammer

Don't do what I did and misjudge where the windscreen ends.   Thought I was using the breaker bar on a bit of the bodywork.

 

The big crack and the even bigger bollocking I got from her inside proved I was wrong.
