Junkman's Irish Climate Improvement Mission A Full Success! - Caution: P6 Series 1 V8 Porn!

Datsun! YUM.

Also, P6 YUM. You've done the right thing. A shabby series one V8 is the absolute ultimate. Shame the ZF box has gone. I reckon that'd be a super upgrade.

Thank you!

Well, since this is not such a primadonna as the other one, I wouldn't have a mental blockage to redo the gearbox upgrade on it.

Congratulations on the new car. Is the 4HP22 from a Range Rover, or will the XJ40/XJ-S version also fit?

Posted

Thanks!

None of them "fit", it needs to be frankensteined together. The best way is to use a Ranger Rover box and bin the transfer case.

Then use a Jaguar tailshaft that needs to be machined off ca. 1/2 inch in a BMW tailshaft housing.

The only serious problem with the above is the speedo drive, the ZFs have electronic ones.

Thus I would like to check whether a BW tailshaft and housing could be adapted.

Excellent work, getting an older and worse version of your existing car feels so wrong but then it feels so right.

I'm not sure what the kipper exchange rate is, to be honest I'm still struggling with Bitcoins

G Whitehouse Autos offer the ZF conversion on many cars. Bet they'd know. I went there recently. The place is amazing!

Prices start from £3900.00 + V.A.T.

Fuck that. Twice.

You can't eat Bitcoins.

An unexpected but not surprising result. The only car which can replace a P6 properly is another P6.

You've come away with a daily-driveable P6B.

I feel so absurdly relieved, after all the talk upthread of deliberately letting the side down, that P6 ownership will continue.

Seat material?

I was just suggesting they might offer some friendly advice if you're lucky. When I was there recently, they were working on a Salmson with a Cotal gearbox, and fitting a ZF to a Daimler V8. Complete with modified column gear lever to reflect the extra ratios. Beautiful engineering. Which, as you've noticed, doesn't come cheap.

Thing is, the standard-fitment BW35 and 65 autoboxes are simply magnificent.

Particularly if you have the change gate with the free play between drive and 2nd rather than drive and neutral - you can drive them like a semi auto, changing down for every corner, traffic light and downgrade.

Understeer disappears when you change down (although body roll doesn't!) and there's a one-way clutch in second that prevents the car rolling backwards.

The only think that stops the gearbox from being perfect is the lack of an overdrive - 2800rpm at 70mph is noisy and unnecessary in a v8.

Oh, that's a 206?

I was wondering all day what it is.

I'm still wondering what it's doing there.

The owner was lured to the roffle by Captain Haddock.

Oh they're certainly not dreadful, but the automatic experience can be readily improved with the addition of a lock-up torque converter. Given I once achieved 26mpg in my P6 V8 with the old BW35, I reckon nuzzling 30 might be possible (on a steady, 60mph run) with the ZF - and they can be knocked easily into lower ratios when needed too. The Omega has a freewheel-type auto, which gives no sodding engine braking at all.

Good kippering, Junkman. I like.

People's minds are completely brainwashed into believing that newer and shinier is better, and the more new replacement bits on ancient 'classic' chod, the better.

It's good to be part of a forum where plenty value what is good for them, rather than pandering to appearances and fashion.

Does it still have one of these? post-17481-0-85789600-1486986062_thumb.jpg

When I was pumping juice for 25p / hour, 5 star was 41p / gallon. Only Rover V8s and Aston Martins ever bought it.

Yes, it does have it despite that stuff isn't used for obvious reasons.

There has been much tinkerage all day, basically tidying and moving bits and bobs from one car to another.

Mr Conelrad thankfully removed the wireless and speakers, now one of the wonderful original blanking plates must be sourced.

We also swapped wheels between the cars, thus undid and redid 40 bloody wheel nuts, ffs!

Mr Conelrad was also good enough to reinstall the cardboard divider in the boot after removing the rear speaker,

a chore I dread almost as much as doing rear brakes on these.

Anyway, have before pics.

The second most half arsed badging known to mankind:

007.jpg

Note bling GB sticker added just to annoy the living shit out of me. As to why some people in the UK replace the L sticker (for "learner")

with a GB sticker (for "getting better") as they progress is beyond me. Also note 100 octane or it will greade instantly sticker, and this one,

shortly before it got ripped out, thrown on the floor and trampled on:

013.jpg

It does look like a salt mine turned inside out:

008.jpg

Speedometer more on turning than a strip show:

009.jpg

Front seats look actually less tatty in real life:

010.jpg

Also note the parachute belts, which I was told today are sought after and valuable.

All I can say about them is that they are by far the biggest rubbish I have ever experienced

and I now fully understand why people had to be manadated into wearing them.

Rear seats aren't bad:

011.jpg

Note terrible floor mats.

What I can't show you in pics is that it smells like a shoe shop in there.

Note original colour:

012.jpg

And rust forming both sides. This requires immediate action.

Photos of its current state tomorrow, because dark now.

Most importantly, the cigarette lighter and interior light are working. I also drove it for the first time today, because inshoorans.

(passed three of those fucking ANPR Gestapo Interceptors on the way home)

It's hard to describe. Of all the P6es I had so far, this is the most responsive. The handling is second to none and the brakes razor sharp.

I already like the car ten times as much as I did the other one.

Oh, and before I forget, I papped that Chinese Junk (<- see what I did there?) as well,

in total disregard of the imminent danger of my camera exploding:

014.jpg

015.jpg

The words "Stan Woods Memorial" have been mentioned to its owner, but despite I'm always right,

he didn't want to listen to me, as usual.

I already noticed on several occasions that the Series 1's lack of the menacing and intimidating gurn of the Series 2s

leads to people mercilessly pulling into its trajectory.

Its docile apprearance is in total disharmony with its character. I quite like that, but the above is rather off pissing.

This is a lovely old bus exactly how I'd like one so as not to be too precious.  Jealous-ometer  at max.

Posted

Oh please don't be jealous. It really looks more than it actually is.

OK, technically it's good and the tub is restored, but every single steel panel is knackered beyond repair

and the interior is rather shoddy.

Yes, it would be relatively easy to bring it to the next level, but that will involve money. A lot of money.

If I ever get around to do this, I already agreed with myself on its potential future colour:

Braincell Grey

Is that mighty Tobacco Leaf in its previous life? That's the best P6 colour by far. Grey doesn't suit these cars. Blue is nice. Gosh, you've really got me missing my ol' Series 1 V8 now. I would like to see yours wearing nicer number plates though. My J-plate S1 had gorgeous period-correct white/yellow plates, including the enormous rear.

Also, the Datsun is mighty. Sorry.

Posted

Yes, it's Tobacco Leaf at heart.

I find Burnt Grey is by far the best colour for a Series 1.

The number plate issue will be addressed.

Thought I recognised the car.

What happened to the rostyle type alloys?

Posted

Thanks for the pictures of this really wonderful and handsome looking big saloon.

Oh, and the Rover-pictures are alright too.

Posted

It's the colour, not its pure and original style that's causing people to pull out on you.  I cannot have a doom blue car for this very reason as every one I've driven is apparently completely invisible to other road users.
