I have a question about advertising.

If you were serious about selling a motorbike where would you advertise it?

And if you were looking for one where would you look?

Via a classified advert

Autotrader is free up to £1000 and then £20

17000 adverts above £1000

17500 traders and 500 private

Ebay is £10

28,000 adverts 23000 classified adverts (not sure how many private and how many are dealers)

Gumtree is free unless you fall for the upselling, and if you are buying, the search functions are crapola.

There are numerous other places like

Car and Classics - Free and 3000 bikes advertised

Forums of which many don't allow adverts but those that do have 12 adverts which are from 2015.

And why are Autotrader still turning over £285 million a year (mostly cars - they take an average of £1800 per month per trader, according to their annual report to shareholder).  As an aside what do they spend £175Million on? (Their annual cost of running the business)

Why hasn't ebay crucified them ?

I've only bought three motorbikes ever (still got two of them), Two came from ebay & the other I'd found a bike I liked on autotrader, went to the dealer to try it. Didn't like it & bought something else even though I'd told them I wasn't buying for six months or so, I'd only gone to sit on a couple & see what to save for... bloody salesmen lol

It all depends on the bike. I've sold via ebay, local paper (ok that was years ago before tinternet took off) and bike forums all with success before. I've never used MCN because I've never had something new and shiny to sell. It's no different to selling old cars. Ebay/Mongtree/Autotrader all have different core audiences.

MCN classifieds (Motorcycle News) ?

Interesting :

14000 bikes listed by dealers 190 by private individuals.

Prices start at £20 for private.

They have a separate "ring for a quote" line for dealers.

Bought bikes from Autotrader and MCN.

Cars from Car and Classics. - never thought to look there for a bike.

What sort of bike is it? Off road tends to be advertised in different places to track bikes, peds go to Facebook, classic stuff has specialist outlets etc

Dunno - I prefer Autotrader's search capabilities over eBay.  I assume eBay aren't that much cheaper and don't have anything extra to offer?

Last two bikes have been off shpock, both were well, below book price and good sellers. It is a bit hit and miss though and not sure I would sell on there but as it's free to list you wouldn't lose anything trying.

50% cheaper for private classifieds ? £10 vs £20

What's a DTR250? I would give some of the Facebook bike selling groups a try as well as the vjmc for the LC - which always make strong money

I always said I'd never ever sign up to facebook, but someone told me today that was the place to try.

The list of bikes is those that 'mates' intend or might try to sell in the next 6 months. I might possibly buy the 400 (not sure if ZZR or ZXR to be honest and I've just sat on it about 2 hours ago. (don't own a helmet so not about to ride it in the dark with temps of -3 outside)

If you have any spare cash and space I would buy the LC and GPZs and possibly the Aprillia 125 then wrap them up and watch them go up in value....

My bike came from a 'dealer' on Ebay. One of the bits that appeals to me is it was buy it now or best offer so I could agree a price before buying it rather than rely on my terrible haggling skills in person.

A lot will depends on how quickly they need to be sold. There's a bloke at work who does a lot of greenlaning and I'd imagine that Dtr (TDR?) would go down well on the forums he frequents, the other bikes will also have the niches. It wouldn't be quick but if they are being sold over the next six months might be worth thinking about for some of them.

Facebook is the place to try....providing you want a collection of penniless morons offering you 1/50th of the value.

I hear you may even be lucky by offering every single add posted from a pushbike to a bus a pound,

Find a local bike sales/mot/coffee shop where all the friendly bikers hang out and if they don't want them they sure will know someone who does, I sold my last two bikes that way while getting an mot.

stick a price next to them on your list as I bet we all know someone who might fancy one.
