Breakdown cover again...soz :)

Time to arrange new breakdown cover; looked at the usual RAC and they want £200 pa for roadside assist, towing and European cover, seems a bit salty to me so I'm going to ditch Euro cover until I need it next winter and try someone else.

Any ideas folks?

After my troubles with the rac I would not recommend them. Nothing personal to anyone here who may work for them.

Euro cover is hard/expensive to get on cars over 10 years old.

I'm currently with Autoaid, £40 and covers whatever car your driving, will cover your partner too.

Britannia Rescue through CSMA (or whatever they've rebranded themselves as now) is what I use for full cover on any car and with Euro cover on a nominated vehicle.

It's still not cheap for the European option, but much cheaper than AA/RAC etc and they've been perfectly happy to cover cars over 20 years old in Europe.

They use local companies to recover and certainly they've always been quick whenever I've needed to use them over the years, sending a flatbed straight away when I've asked because there's no way they're going to fix it at the roadside. Never had cause to test the European side of the cover though.

Have you got some of your old chod on a classic policy?  Should have cover as part of that Id've thought.  Peter James have breakdown included and last time I used it (in December for a Safrane FTP) it was AA.

I just take out short term Euro cover when going abroad once a year, usually less than 30 quid and never had any issues with older cars. I think it was Zurich with the Italy trip, trough the Co-Op. As good if not better than AA/RAC terms. UK cover, you really are at the hands of independants, which vary from brilliant to useless depending who you get and where you are. Even in certain areas when your have AA/RAC/Green Flag cover..anyone can turn up. Speaking from the other side, Interpartner seem like a decent company and most cover supplied with your insurance will be through them, and usually at less cost than a standalone policy. We cover our area for them and they are always fair. Check your bank account cover if you have it, some of these can be a pretty good deal.

I have uk roadside and recovery with "Rescue my car.com".

Good value. Haven't claimed however, reviews positive.

Found on a comparison site.

I've got a Nationwide Flex Plus account might be worth looking at. Costs a tenner a months but gives european breakdown. I'm yet to find a 10 year old vehicle clause.

No got that round my neck. My other half has "rescue my car.com" on her newish car.

I have "Autonational Rescue" for my 18 year old motor.

Again found on comparison site. Good value. Haven't claimed. Reviews ok AFIK.

Autoaid for me. Very pleased. They have recovered my wife's car once and changed the tyre to the spare once. Both times service was prompt and professional. She has never been asked to pay up, either by them or me!

Just asked her to sum up the service in three words she says "Excels my expectations"!!!

I used to use GEM when I lived in uk, just googled and 85 quid for recovery extra,65 quid for recover reclaim (the diff being you pay reclaim upfront (oncc) and send a claim form in -- used to cough up in 2-3 days so no biggie) can add more people as reqd to the policy too

I've got this too as they cover commercials upto 3.5t whereas most of the others only go upto just over 2t. There's no older vehicle exclusion I could find.

I've used autoaid twice per year, very good service from them. Since they were taken over last year they don't do the pay and then claim back thing. Unbeatable for £42.

Autoaid is ace.

Used it far too many times. Renewal is due but I'd only get a month's use out of before my Duster arrives so I guess I'll be breaking down loads in Feb without cover!

When my RAC cover was about to renew, I rang them to cancel it; told them I was going to Autoaid and they said they'd match the price, so I went with that as I'm bone idle.

They use Britannia Rescue.AKA.Liverpool Victoria. Green Flag is RBS/Direct Line/Churchill/Privilidge.  They all do the same thing...devil's in the details..

Bloody good gents, cheers; will certainly be looking at Autoaid in the morning.

It's a shame you can't get ADAC without a German address... I've heard they are supposed to be excellent.

Edit: apparently you might be able to buy over the phone with a UK address. I'll report back as soon as I find out as I'm about to need a years cover for mid Feb onwards.
