Saturday dawned and I awoke excited... Today was the day to set off on the long journey to collect my new Saab.

Mrs Beard dropped me off at Preston station in time for the 09.53 to Edinburgh. Once on board

I was quickly offered a nice cup o coffee

And settled back in seat H24 for the journey.

Just North of Carlisle luncheon was served

So that was nommed along with some fizzy water.

Some snowy scenery arrived, which made me wonder if it would get any worse further North

But thankfully it didn't, despite the OMGSNOCHAOS predicted by the BBC

Arrived at Edinburgh, just time for a wee (20 pence worth) and a shufty at the departures board to find the platform for the next leg. Platform 17. Departing in. 3 minutes.... Eeeek. Made it with a few seconds to spare.

Arrived at Markinch at 13.22 to be met by the welcoming Barry Cade alongside a very smart looking Saab 9-5.

Back for a cup o tea and a natter. I met Roscoe the dog.post-5532-0-82774100-1484572119_thumb.png

In my new Saab I left for the journey home. What a lovely car. Stopped for petrol then off over the Forth Bridge. Next stop (another wee, this time free)post-5532-0-54184700-1484572433_thumb.png

Then back on the almost deserted motorway. Cruise control set at a relaxing 60mph and settled back in the wood and leather clad business class compartment that is the Saab 9-5.

100 miles or so and a food stop

An hour or two later, the final stop before home for yet another wee and a coffee. Still no snow, but temps dropping and dire warnings on the motorway gantry boards of snow and ice. Car showing outside temperature as -2.

Snug and warm in the Saab though. 38.9 mpg on the display and all is well in my world.

Arrived home at 8.45 pm

To an enthusiastic* welcome from Dog Beard

An absolutely grand day out.

Thanks go to Barry Cade for getting me at the station, giving me the opportunity to see his fantastic Rover 75, the cup o tea and meeting his dogs..... Oh, and for a lovely and extremely well sorted Saab!

That's nice, very clean despite the filthy roads up here. First class on a collection thread, is that an AS first?

Note the first class quality* of Virgin's on board dining experience.  Orient Express, FRO.

During the week it would be lobster on angel wing with larks tears. Weekends less so. Egg and ham sarnies or some kind of roofing felt wrapped around a carrot. Veggie option.

Not that it mattered really. I was on my way to COLLECT A SAAB!.

I have done a lot of weekday Virgin first classing on business trips, and the food is mostly still shite.  There's just more of it.  The greasy breakfast is not bad, but the lunches are meh.  Beats Great Western, though.

Try Northern Rail or Trans Pennine for food.. Just yak!

Virgin wins every time IMHO

Though a first world problem really! The trains were fine, on time and got me there.

Tru dat.  The East Coast Pullman trains used to be great when they had the last proper dining cars serving actual food, but now long gone.

I was just happy to get there TBH. Packed a few sarnies and a flask anyhoo!

The car looks pretty ace.  I probably over spent getting an X type Estate and should have got a Saab instead.

That's going to be a weird raffle if 94 people choose the same two numbers...

I loved my 9-5. That looks a well sorted example as well.

I have a copy of this book.

I was gonna sell for £££

But unless you want to buy it, I can post it off for a read then post it back when done, to be honest I thought it was a crap read, but might just be me.

Tell us more about how the Saab feels, BtB. I've driven tens of thousands of miles in 900s, never the cars made under GM. Looks like a very pleasant machine indeed.

The 9-5 is an excellent* machine. Well collected.

* Except when they go wrong, which happens more often than most Saab owners would want to admit.
