After three years... 216SLi - 25/2 - behaving itself

Someone did send me a module, but it was a while ago now! Can't remember stuff from last week...

That would have been me.

Tinkering time today until I go to work at 4ish. So let's dig into the parts haul.

Cracked indicator replaced with one from Joe. Super easy job - comes out with one screw and just clips in and out.

Took these two HT leads out and replaced them - rubber perished on one and the other was a replacement with scrapyard paint marker on it. All four are original spec now.

Replaced those and the crankcase breather valve, and the car now idles and runs again!

Up next, the dash trim.

Here's the new one to go in.

Both ends of the old one are a bit worse for wear, and the wood pattern is a bit nicer on the new one too.

This is where I'm up to - when I got the car the clock wasn't working, it turns out the bulb has died. We need to go out anyway so the car's getting a run to somewhere for a bulb, and a couple of odd jobs, and I'll report back later. (Gives the radio code timer a bit of a run too!)

The electric windows have stopped working altogether, and it's not the fuses.  Does anyone have any idea why that might be?

My 414 sli had issues with the windows, mirrors and fuel gauge. Turned out to be the earth on the front slam panel. Unsure if the 1.6 has it in the same place

Do R8s have the same issue as earlier Rovers with the window switch contacts getting fuzzed up and needing a clean?

My 75 mirrors do this, must be a Rover thing.

It does! I'll check it. It's the windows and sunroof.

Both were working fine before today.

I believe this is overdue:

It's had a proper run now, and all is well. Check engine light is still on, but I bet that's a duff IAT sensor, it's not making it run funny anyway. Nothing really needs doing except the tracking.

Did this too:

Much better.

The clock is still broken.

Ghosty on the road!  Nice work.  You now have a decent car with refreshed oily bits- it'll last you years.

Have fun  :-D

Maybe my sunroof failed too but It was ten years back now.

Yes, I think I sent my last good clock to someone down south. Is it just the bulb? It's an easy replacement if so.

I'm pleased you thought the remaining wood trim was worth salvaging... someone else did ask, but I thought it not good enough to package up and send to them for actual money.

Is there a diagnostic port somewhere on the car? Readers are about £8 off the 'bay, suitable for 90's/noughties cars, they can tell you what the car thinks is wrong, and can cancel any registered faults.

If that car has the flashing LEDs on the ECU, you can clear the fault codes by removing the 7.5 amp no. 7 backup fuse for 30 seconds.

Shell suit keeping your early 90s game STRONG there!

Glad I'm not the only one who picked up on that, pure class!

Just read the updates on this, that pic with the shellsuit might as well have been from the early '90s!

Anybody got any Vera's? (Just seeing if anyone recognises the reference)

Thanks for the tips!

Joe - the clock doesn't seem to work at all. I changed the bulb and holder as I couldn't seem to get the old dead bulb out of the holder. More testing/fiddling required.

The dash trim isn't in bad condition at all - as you can see it's better than mine was. It fits better too, I'm really pleased with it.

No OBD on this - the 'check engine' light means the flashing LED on the ECU has something to tell you. A feature unique to the 2/416 iirc.

saucedoctor: which fuse box is that in? I removed one of the underbonnet ones marked ECU and it didn't do anything.

I am quite fond of the early '90s look...

It does sound like your clock has failed. That is a thing that happens.

Ghosty: The Haynes Book of Automotive Fault Code Lies doesn't give the fusebox location, but has this drawing:

Just had a spot of interweb searching for you Ghosty. I thought mine had a diagnosis port so I had a look online. Apparently, depending on age there is an obd to the behind the fag lighter, have to reach round and feel for it or under the cubby hole below steering column. Failing that there should be two diagnostic ports under the bonnet. A round green one fore alarm and immobiliser and a round white one for ecu interrogation. You can buy adapters for them too.

From memory, the fuse box is in front of the driver's right knee.

Posted

It is, but there's one just above the battery too, that also has an ECU fuse in it.

I was going to check over it this morning, then I remembered my mum's gone out in it instead of her Bini.

She really likes it.
