Focus door lock question

The drivers door log on the Focus won't lock with the key, feels as if it's broken inside. Apart from another key and door barrel from breakers is there an alternative here I haven't thought of?

All the other locks etc work fine.

Ford may not be that rediculous for a new barrel. Also may be fixable DIY - I'm sure the internet has something somewhere on it

Take the lock out and go to see an old school lock guy with a key, they can replace the wafers in the lock meaning you can use the original key, I pay £15 per lock at a place local, it's not worth getting my messing around for that

GET BUB! Watching him take out a focus door lock at Albert Looms was like watching a master craftsmen at work, never has a size 11 been wielded with such accuracy...........

Size 12 actually. First one was already broken though. I can't answer the question but it dies seem a common occurrence on numerous fords. My dad had a few sierras like that and my aunts L plated escort did too.

Just worn wafers. The confusing but is it'll still lock, but that's because any Ford barrel will lock with any correct type key

I solved mine by getting the GEM and two remote fobs out of a higher spec car from the scrapyard, 5 mins fitting and another 5 coding the keys so it was easier than taking the door trims off.

Hmm I like sound of that. I felt ready to commit a murder last time I replaced the door cards. What do I need to do then? Where's the GEM? Do I just need the keys and the module? No lock?

GEM is under the RH edge of the driver's side dash right by the pedals, it's on clips. 4 multiplugs to undo. Pink label is the billy basic CL only module, brown label is the one with the radio gear for remote fobs. You don't need to code the module to the car, once it's plugged in you can add the keys yourself as long as you have two already. Once that's done you can program the fobs to the GEM easily. (it's all a load of ignition on/off type entry and it's documented in the manual)

My biggest outlay was £1.50 for horseshoe blank keys (to fit round the remote) and £3 on the local market to get them cut.

If yours has the correct cdl module  you can just programme new remotes to it  you dont need any keys as the immobilier is separate to the locking system

turn the ign on and off 4 times and if it chimes its ready to accept a new remote  , if you have a remote press the unlock button and it should chime again .

So if I purchased the GEM and some keys i should be able to do this without any high end diagnostics?

I paid a tenner for my Chinkkie CL remote.

Not fitted yet....

I paid about £40 a few years ago for a new ignition barrel and key from a Ford dealer, both matching the existing locks on the car. I would think that could be done a lot cheaper now thanks to eBay and YouTube. The hard bit would be getting to the dodgy barrel.

I have a totally unrelated topic to the OPs but to save starting a new topic thought I'd ask here, about 20years ago my old man had a '91 H reg Orion LX (mk5 Escort style) anyway the keys were crap and seemed to always break, trying to open a Ford with tibbe keys when it was icy was always a risk.

However you could lock and unlock the car no problems with the key in either of the front door locks (car had central locking) but one night some little scrotes tried to steal it, we came out to find the passenger door lock was missing the black plastic cover/surround and the door lock whilst still intact was now like a bare metal thing and the keyhole was suddenly massive, I think they'd probably just popped the black plastic cover off and got disturbed but from that moment on, although the drivers door lock was Undamaged the car now wouldn't unlock from that door, the key would go nuts in the lock and turn as if it was going to unlock but would then encounter resistance to the point you thought if you tried to turn it with anymore force the key would snap before the key turned in the lock enough to unlock it, the now fubar'd passenger side door lock still unlocked the car fine, it would also lock fine from the passenger side door lock BUT once locked and the key back in the vertical position the key wouldn't come out the lock, but as I said would come out the lock fine after unlocking, so what we then had to do was unlock from passenger side and lock from drivers side, does anyone know what the help was going on with them? And why someone buggering up the passenger side lock would cause issues with the drivers one?

Yup. You can even code new keys to the car without diagnostics as long as you have at least two keys to start with.
