VW Emissions Fix

I have the 1.6 and have had a couple of letters which I'm ignoring as I intend to drive it until one of us expires.

If I was planning on chopping it in soon I would maybe have it done to marginally up the trade in, if I could spare the time to drink VW coffee.

There is a video in German on you tube showing the chip cutter being fitted.

I wonder if this will be enforced as an MOT item? They'll know the VINs and associated reg of those done and not done.

MOT emissions is a smoke test only so wouldn't be able to pick up if it had been done or not.

So the general consensus is to avoid it then?

If it's going to wreak havoc with the DPF then I think I'll definitely be avoiding it because it's only a couple of months back from an independent VW specialist garage after having "diesel particle filter instructions" and "engine fault garage" messages on the dash, along with flashing glow plug light, EML on permanently and DPF warning light on permanently, it went to a diesel specialist who billed us for £550 for investigation work, replacement parts but couldn't fix it, they did however insist it was not the DPF needing replaced and not to let anyone else replace it, independent VW specialist eventually fixed it with a bill of £350 which included 2 lots of some sort of DPF cleaner at £44 each, they then had to reflash the ECU anyway as even after cleaning DPF out they couldn't perform a regent as Diagnostic machine was saying ECU was continually saying DPF was 47% clogged up when it now wasn't. Car now drives as well as it used to, has all its power back but does a lot more regens than it ever used to, coupled with some smoke from under bonnet near passenger headlight, acrid burning smell and increased revs (normal idle 750rpm, idle during DPF regen 1000rpm) and sometimes the fan runs continually for about 5mins after the engine is switched off, so don't really want to do anything which will cause problems again. As the cars V5 is still in my dads name and he's getting the letters he's pretty insistent on it going in as he's fell for all the bullshit that if they're sending letters it's important that it gets done.

It's a remap which trades increased CO2 for reduced NOX.

Will they be rebanding the cars for VED purposes then?

Well I guess if you've got the car working properly and the VW fix breaks it again (related or un-related), I guess you could use that as a thing that their update broke it? Thus they would be liable to fix it. ;)

Can't feel too sorry for VW right now. The lieing bastards.

I reckon they should keep this nugget in the drawer for Brexit negotiations.

Put all of the cars involved into the top tier of emissions based tax bands and say that VW/Germany has to pay for the increased costs until the cars are finally scrapped.

There would be no additional cost to the owner, just paid directly to the UK Government... If they don't like that, we'll accept full and unrestricted access to the single market, without any other obligations...

:D

I'd put it back to how it was to that! "ok sit, we just need to plug this in.... Oh"

Wonder if they would write me a letter stating my car should pass its mot in the guise it was? Or give me the full market value of it as per 1997 prices and crush it? Either could work... (granted there would probably only be the shell left if they wanted to crush it, with the number plates cable tied onto it somewhere with the v5 tucked behind)

We're bloody lucky if we get an accurate brake testing weight for a car, I had a Focus the other day that stuck it down as 15 Kgs, the brakes were well efficient on that.
