Old merc

I've got a hankering for an old Merc as a winter hack, W201, W124, W126 etc.

Needs to be cheep (like the budgie)

If you are after cheap and cheerful you might hit lucky in the Gumtree world.   God, I miss those yellow free-ads where stuff like this once lurked.    I always buy rock bottom spec when Merc-shopping and it has been easier to find a good runner with shit body than the whole package.   I still see chrome wheel-arched four pot W124s advertised locally for about a grand.   If you can find a relatively unmolested W202 C Class (first gen) that would probably do you a turn.   Not real MBs in my book but not many people read my book.....

Why are they not out of interest, they seem very similar to 190e's

I think quality took a massive nose dive with these?

Remember a mate's dad having one in the late 90's and it seemed like a bit of class

C Class just emanate from a period when as T-A-D-T-S points out, quality took a dive.   They are also differently engineered with regard to steering, suspension etc.   Can make them cheaper to repair in some instances but I don't feel the love like I do the earlier cars.   If it was just a winter hack I wouldn't personally disregard a W202 but it wouldn't be hanging about for long when it got needy.....

For cheapo w124s see Junkman's unhappy experience, I doubt that was the worst by a long shot. £500 on a C-class goes much further.

Would you be interested in an autoshite - bike 190e?

Good points:

MOT until 27th july 2017

Engine and gearbox in good condition

Bodywork largely in good order, as is the interior

Recent new plugs, air & oil filters

It's cheap

Bad points:

Water ingress - Possibly sunroof, or rear windscreen resulting in a wet back seat

Dashboard cracked

Sunroof rain deflectors rusty

MOT Advisories largely ignored

I haven't used it much since I bought it. Mainly for shopping, and a couple of trips down south to see friends.

I was going to work on the advisories and the leaks in the new year and then try to sell it, but I could really do with getting my van back on the road.

It's a real shame the engine isn't knackered on that as it deprives someone the chance of asking what the sumpisfullofman.

Ok how much is the merc?

Omegod guiltily looks at pile of Christmas presents and wonders if he can take them back for cash refunds.............

Splendid :-D . 1.6 or 1.8?

Incidentally, that is, literally, the most logical thing to happen to someone seeking a German saloon car; the purchase of a Japanese two-seater.

I love this place a lot.

1.8, the 1.6 would have been to slow for me I think.

There are some lively W202s though. I had a c230K Sport with a manual box which I loved. It was also a bit of a time machine in that it rusted like it was a 1970s Datsun.

I wondered who had that! I spotted you in Didsbury a couple of months ago.

I was looking at W202s on eBay yesterday out of interest. All the W202s I could see were dirt cheap but had serious rust issues. All the pre facelift ones seem to be dead by now - I used to see them around quite a bit seven or eight years ago, but they all disappeared very suddenly. They were always rusty all over. Old Man and I went to view one in about 2007/8, an N reg C250TD, with a view to replacing his 190E 1.8.

W202 didn't compare at all.

That Merc would have been perfect, unfortunately I purchased an MX5 yesterday.

Ah never mind. I really ought to fix a few things on this car before i get rid anyway. Hope the Mazda serves you well.

I've got a pre-facelift w202. It's dead.

It's got this infrared immobiliser key which costs £how much?! to replace or repair, and getting rid of the immobiliser appears to be too much of a bastard of a job to be worth it.

There were a few electrical faults as well. Those switches and stalks might look the same, but on w202's they're a lot less solid and fuck up a lot sooner.

On the later w202s they switched from oil-based to water-based paint and it was several years before they realised they'd have to galvanise the panels. This is also why so many numbers-reg Sprinters get that rust acne effect.

My 190E is used by Mrs Rocker in all weathers and does 200 miles most weekends, never  goes under cover and hasn't really been rustproofed.   It has yet to develop any serious rot save for a bleb round the sunroof seal and an advisory on flaking underseal.   When the rear screen came out to fix a persistent leak the surround was rust-free.   It has a simple metal key with plastic grip, keep-fit windows, no air-con, ABS or airbags.   It represents the ultimate development of the motor-car by my standards (if you want your "other" car to feel like a Rolls, drive a Minor daily).

Its 27 years old now and is starting to get some of the TLC it should have had a long time ago - I bought it as another disposable cheap old Merc but I can see how difficult it will be to replace if I don't look after it.
