sierraman Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 Has anyone tried this stuff? It's £3.80 for a 400ml tin. Thought might be ok for box sections etc. I'm only using it on the Mondog so I'm not after something that's going to preserve it to hand down to my grandchildren, just something that might hold off the grot for a few years.
mercrocker Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 Haven't tried it, trouble is with rust treatment is you only find out if its any good when it is too late if it isn't! Often the difference in price and quality is down to how well it creeps rather than its inherent anti-corrosion properties. Let us know how you get on - its certainly a good price, I had some acceptable results with the Lidl stuff inside door panels etc and would imagine this of similar source. AMC Rebel 1
Retro_Auto Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 As a general rule Aerosols are not good value for money as the amount of product in them is usually 100ml, the rest is propellant. If you haven't got access to a compressor then consider one of those hand-pump tins, or even a garden sprayer. Look at the areas that are prone to rot on your particular model, (like the nearside rear door on a Focus) Maybe worth looking at the rear chassis rails on a Mondeo, a weakness on all mid-size Fords for decades.
sierraman Posted December 10, 2016 Author Posted December 10, 2016 For £3 it's handy to use as and when. Waxoyl tends to need warming up beforehand. Ok I guess for use on brake pipes, inside jacking points and the chassis legs.
mrcitroen Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 I have the Waxoyl pump up sprayer. It works, however it is really messy to set up and use. I started using the Bilt Hamber dynax S50 cans with the long hose. Seem to work well, but not cheap. How effective it is I don't know.
sierraman Posted December 10, 2016 Author Posted December 10, 2016 I had one of those Waxoyl Sprayers years ago, it was a pump with a hose with a nail in the end. Awful it was, the Waxoyl just spurred out in an entirely random fashion.
mercrocker Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 Aerosols are not cheap, indeed. Dynax stuff is the best I have come across for actual application. However, I am going to invest in a compressor in the New Year - I am trying to rustproof 4 cars here and spent £150 on aersols this summer. The Dynax stuff comes in bulk for a lot less per litre than the spray cans. Agree 100pc on the Waxoyl squirty thing - absolute joke, got about half a litre over the back axle and none in the chassis legs. I can see some merit in cheap stuff for outer areas like under wings, floors etc with a compressor. I think I would still rather pump good stuff in where it has to be taken on trust.
theshadow Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 have used it on quite a few cars, seems fine, also comma wax seal stuff as well,..
twosmoke300 Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 That comma wax seal seems to cover well but the solvent takes your breath away . I've just bought 100 quids worth of dinitrol for the Landy which I'm putting on this week so I will let you know how it goes HMC 1
dieselnutjob Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 If you do wax a box section or whatever, and then later on something needs welding, I am imagining that the wax will make it difficult / dangerous to weld. Am I imagining right or wrong? I have all the panels now to start restoring the 604. I am kind of thinking that I should restore it and get it rot free and then wax it. The problem is that this will take years.
sierraman Posted December 11, 2016 Author Posted December 11, 2016 A friend of mine burnt his garage out in the circumstance you suggest. Must have been recently applied though as the solvent evaporates.
mrcitroen Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 The guy I use for welding always waxes his work afterwards and has never mentioned the hassle or dangers of re welding. If it was an issue I'm sure he would ask me if parts have been waxed before starting. Don't think he would want his place going up.
Timewaster Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 If the wax is any good then you won't need to weld it again at a later date?
DodgeRover Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 Cavity wax for cavities and under body wax for erm underneath. They have different properties. Incidentally the 3m underbody wax seems to be excellent but pricy.
rml2345 Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 Would be interested to know if it's any good. My usual approach to rustproofing is Hamerite Underseal and a brush which is reasonable value but horribly messy and time consuming. Disappointed to know that aerosols aren't an easy way round it.
DSdriver Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 Warning: I had an email from Toolstation allegedly about an item I had bought with an attachment they expected me to open. As I hadn't bought anything I knew it was full of computer debilitating venom but if you have bought something be very very careful about what you click on as their website/email appears to have been infiltrated by malware.
AMC Rebel Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 What are people using to apply was using a compressor - one of those paraffin spay bottle thingies?

strangeangel Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 I've used it on scooter/moped frames, also brake pipes etc. Works great for that, but would likely bankrupt you if you tried to do a whole car or something.

paulplom Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 I have a 5 litre tin of waxoyl free to collect if anyone wants it. DSdriver and strangeangel 2

sierraman Posted December 12, 2016 Author Posted December 12, 2016 What are people using to apply was using a compressor - one of those paraffin spay bottle thingies?Did the Mondeo with a 80p garden sprayer then 70:30 Waxoyl and white spirits. Less tidying up doing it like that.
sierraman Posted December 12, 2016 Author Posted December 12, 2016 Trigger sprayer. You'll only get a few uses out of it but it's 80p so... important to let it down with some spirits and sit it in some boiling hot water.
Bobthebeard Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 I use ACF 50 in a trigger spray bottle... Spent hours spraying the rear suspension on the MG ZT. Two months before it had to have most of the parts replaced due to terminal rust. Note to self. Rust proof stuff before it gets rusty and save £££££££'s.
Bobthebeard Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 Don't get it on rubber bushes.Errr.. Why?
sierraman Posted December 12, 2016 Author Posted December 12, 2016 I don't know why but the make up of Waxoyl in particular can cause deterioration of some rubber bushes.
