Toyota Corolla 2003 1.6vvti - Anything to look out for?/gen me up!

A guy in the office is looking for a WBOD. I pointed out Neils corollolloa to him, and he liked it very much, just the issue of distance puts him off. But, he likes the idea of a corolla (his missus will drive it too, so small is good, he poo-pooed a nice Camry estate I sent him)

So, some quick auto tradering later, I find this

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201609238054415?postcode=sl71lq&radius=25&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&model=COROLLA&sort=price-asc&make=TOYOTA&advertising-location=at_cars&price-to=1000&page=1

which helpfully is being sold by the same guy another colleague and I bought the CRV from last year, so at least we know he's fairly honest and sound.

Colleague wants to go and see it tomorrow, so I would like to go a bit prepared, anything to look out for? I'll take my code reader, and listen out for the noisy front wheel bearing that was the only advisory. What else?

That looks a good buy, all be it a boring motor it looks a very straight, genuine and well looked after car for £600? And its almost new.

They were pretty much my exact thoughts! Honest John has lots of scare stories on them, 80% of which aren't for this engine/year anyway

VVTi do good MPG on pez but can do poor mpg on oil.

I had a VVTi with such a thirst for oil that it would do a litre every 500 miles. Tedious when you do 650 a week.

Other than that, everyone should own a good Toyota.

So it was tested 2 months after it had already passed?

WTF

P/X on a dealer I guess, fresh mot always makes something easier to sell I guess, plus if you have a matey mot test much fewer advisorys looks better when selling. The previous advisory's would certainly put me off.

Yes, we saw that, I had it in my mind to check.

But the goalposts have changed and he now wants an mx5... I've agreed to drive him to see one tomorrow lunchtime so who knows what might happen. Thus this thread may become junk I'm afraid

Neil - I wanted him to get yours, but he wasn't up for the return trip, no matter how loudly we called him a pussy

Yep, I have warned him of this. The one we are potentially going to see tomorrow is 3 flipping grand, but has not had a mention of rust for any MOT ever, so it's obviously not broken through to the surface yet... 2005 car.

He showed me a nice £700 S reg one, he was disappointed when I showed him the long advisory list for corrosion 'not affecting the structure' on the near year old MOT...

LOLWAT.

A search for a 3-figure WBoD has now turned into looking at a £3k MX-5?

Yep. Im not complaining, not my money. He did mention a vw eos though, I said I was unable to help him with that as I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing I helped him buy it...

Plus, he is very un-car. Knows nothing about them. Has a 1.4 206 in Portugal, and drove a very autoshite r reg Suzuki motorbike until it grenaded itself the other month. I think his girlfriend will use the car more, hence the feminine choices, but we get on well, and I'll do all I can to help, especially drive him to see it, as the only other car we can take is a crv which will munch fuel
