R20 TS for Sale - what do you chaps think would be a fair offer?

Go look at and see how you feel about the work required. I wouldn't expect £1500 to be an unreasonable price for it though.

Old Renaults aren't as cheap as they used to be although the market for them is still relatively small. R20s are still a bit unloved and haven't gone up in value like R4s, R5s have and that keeps prices lowish.

But go and look at with a pocket full of cash and a mate who doesn't have any attachment to the model and talk to the seller.

Very hard to judge! There was a R20 TS manual up for £4500 on carandclassic recently. It sold quickly! What the actual selling price was is unknown though. However that one had had (according to the seller) a "Ground up rebuild" - you couldn't exactly say that about this grey one!

Door handles are age related, early 30s had the button-type as well. Also I'm quite sure that Renault dropped the L for the TL.

It all depends on how much you want it, I think it looks lovely but £1800 would be my limit, personally i'd offer £1500 and then haggle around £1600-1700, if it's as nice as you hope in the flesh.

Thanks, didn't know that - I think the point was that the 1.6 engine was too small for the weight of the car - hence the changes

You asked for what we think...

no, only slighlty blinded by the "want this" virus that may cause you to be blown up by those terrorists.

If you go viewing the car, take a good bodyguard with you!

If you do go and see it, turn up in the other Renault, and look suitably impoverished.............

Just one snag, it's an automatic................ 8)

Turn up in a 'Guna, he'll probably take pity on you and GIVE it to you.................

Don't be afraid to pay full whack if it is shit hot and what you really want.

Not sure if I've missed something, but I thought you were struggling to find funds to get the other Renner back on the road? Adding another to the fleet may not help the situation. Have you got room to keep them both under cover as well, knowing old French tin's propensity to rust?

I don't understand the idea of being insulted by an offer, nothing says you have to accept it after all.

Couple of years back I had an old Renault for sale on an enthusiast website for £3k which was a very reasonable price. Guy comes up, spends TWO HOURS going over it, tells me all sorts needed doing (it didn't) and that he'd give me £1200. That was insulting. He got told he could fuck off then fuck off some more and then finish with a side order of fuck off. He then decided he'd up his offer but I don't like dealing with idiots so sold it later that week for the full £3k to someone else.

If the condition is as good as it looks then I would say it's a £2k car. If there are problems then the price will drop dramatically.

I tend to work on this principle. Car is up for , let's say, £2k. For every fault not mentioned in the ad, subtract the sum of money it's going to take to put right. Make offer.

if they have advertised it at the price of a mint one then that's fair enough.

If they have advertised it on the basis of the condition that it's actually in then that won't work

Things are looking up I'm glad to say - got a new job now, and the new starter motor for the auto has arrived - I take your point about keeping them undercover though! I am having second thoughts about picking this second one up - biting off more than you can chew etc! I would probably end up having to sell one of these, and mine is in better condition overall tbh! The MOT advises of general under-body corrosion, and coupled with the state of the bonnet and the tailgate, I think it may not be the best example.....................

I insured the automatic one for £143 with an agreed value of £2k with FJ btw!

Funnel the cash you have into the one you've got.  There's nowt more frustrating than having too many projects and not enough funds and few things more satisfying than having one really nice car to enjoy.
