I've been three times too. First one was on a journo ticket and was an amazing sunny day out for myself and Mrs_Seth even if we were stood only feet away from where Jochen Mass nearly killed himself by landing upside down in a Lancia D50 grand prix car .

Second time a freind offered me a spare Friday ticket on the Wednesday before and that was amazing weather too though I had to leave by about 2pm so spent a mad few hours running round trying to see what I could.

The third time we went as a paying family for the Sunday and it bucketed down all afternoon so that I ended up getting drenched as Mrs_and Ickle_Seth went and sat in the car in the car park.  Not really the enjoyable day I had been looking forward too particularly when the cost is considered.

I don't know about you but i got absolutely denched today, i don't think I've ever been this wet before, it was a shame to see everyone in their lovely outfits looking like drowned rats and I've nearly been blinded on more than one occasion today by the sea of umbrellas, i even saw a few people nearly get into fights over them!

 

Hopefully tomorrow will be much nicer, it does seem odd though seeing millon pound cars soaking wet and covered in mud.

 

 

 

One thing i have noticed though is there's a lot more corporate areas where the public can't go, all the paddocks are now access only to control the crowd and it does now feel more "them and us". I even saw David Coulthard at one point on his VIP balcony in his full suit drinking champagne whilst we all got soaked through down below.

That was my job there for the last couple of years, making sure only people with the correct passes get into the paddock. Dress code was also very strict(in a period sense) but that actually got relaxed half way through last year.

Well I'm home now, at last. I have to say it wasn't the weekend i'd hoped it be, Saturdays awful weather really spoilt the day for most people, I've never been so wet before and there was no where dry for us commoners to sit or stand then Sunday was ridiculously busy so you couldn't see much and getting any kind of food or drink was a nightmare, parking was chaos and took about 45 mins to get in and the field was like a bog.

 

It was disappointing to hear that you needed a ticket for the 'over the road' bit this year but we was only told a couple of days before the event so i had a panic on to buy a pair of Saturday tickets on ebay which was another unexpected £80, very few planes were flying this time after the Shoreham plane crash and the rules changing.

 

There was a lot of young toffs showing off and waving their money about and clearly just there because 'its the place to be scene' rather than for the cars or event, personally i don't think I'll go again, especially as it cost me so much money, probably near on £800 for the 3 days with a hotel and food.

 

It also took me nearly 6 hours to get home last night too after they closed the Dartford Tunnel due to a power failure, i went through London and it was a nightmare, the real icing on the cake. I didn't get home until 12.10am (i was meant to be back at 9pm at first) and i had to be up for work at 6am this morning. I'm very grumpy today!

I had to go for the experience. I've talked about going for years. Saturday was dreadful. I too was soaked through as was Mrs faker. Sunday was great. There was twice the crowd if not more. The weather must have put folk of attending on Sat. Overall I really enjoyed the event. Over the road was an experience on its own. I'd liked there to have been a proper autojumble though. I'll post up some pics later.

To be fair if it wasn't for Saturdays weather and how large and commercialised it's got then it was still a excellent event, I'll probably give it another chance in a couple of years as my wife really enjoyed the dressing up and looking at the stalls

Did you happen to watch that Goodwood show tonight on ITV4 at 9pm by any chance? It was a bloody good show to be fair, they did a feature about the racing A35's, they are fantastic things, it's well worth watching on the ITV player if you missed it, maybe not with the misses though, she'll want one even more!

Back home (over the pond) the car classic and vintage car scene is not in the same league as on the mainland. We've to be content with ford rs days, mini days, vag shows etc. Events are for specific groups or marques, and a lot of them are modified shows. On a good day a few hundred vehicles might be on display. Don't get me wrong. I like what we do in N.I. I am a big follower of the historic motorsports events, but we have a couple of small circuits and just don't or can't do the likes of bug jam never mind Goodwood! I've never ever seen the calibre of vehicles involved in any event. The buses from Chichester were vintage routemasters! All in mint condition. The Goodwood car park itself was an unbelievable sight. The racing! It was genuine. No holds barred riders and drivers going all out in vehicles worth millions! It was truly a spectacle.

I went last year as a colleague who doesn't like large crowds, but is a member was letting her tickets go for cheap. Also helps that I'm a relative local of course. But I absolutely loved every moment, and I was genuinely sad that it was time to go home. Next time I'll make more time for the public car park, because most of the metal (and fibreglass) in there is equally as good as on the inside.

One of my best mates is also a member, so I get to pop up on test days. I think I bumped into Ant Davidson before the Members' Meeting earlier in the year.

Now... if i had one gripe... it would be the line up for the St Mary's Trophy. Don't get me wrong, 30 exactly the same a30/a35 with exactly the same controlled components and running gear makes for close racing. But for me (who's only ever watched it on telly) I was a little deflated. I wanted to see the lotus cortinas battling mustangs and galaxies. To watch minis going up the inside of the big jags. A35 giving some big yoke an embarrassing run for its money. I wasn't on my own either, I heard others mention it too. Maybe next year....
