Ta - this should counter the accusation that somehow the mystery car has been “photoshopped” into the picture.

I see in that Twitter thread that the renders of a mockup in the styling studio are getting dangerously close to becoming gospel.

Cutting/pasting and retouching of photos wasn't uncommon, but even upon closer inspection of the picture in my 1960s copy of this book, it doesn't look like (I am no forensic expert though, mind) the entire car was added later.

I remember this thread and was trying to find it the other day.  Have read through dozens of pages on the PH site and, unless I've missed it, one thing no-one seems to have mentioned is that reg plates looks 99% French, not UK.  It's not deep enough for a UK plate.  Co-incidentally the car looks French too.

Wipers LHD pattern too!

No exact match but some similarities.

Back on twitter again...

Just spotted this on bookface. The builder of the blue special drew heavily on the styling of Bond Equipe GT 2+2 I reckon. Similar proportions too.

This one's up for under £1k with original registration and NOS bodyshell thrown in for good measure. Barg for someone interested in an usual project.

Hmmm, interesting theory. The last two characters of the number plate look like they might be "13" (first digit not so certain), which is the department  code for Bouches-du-Rhône (Marseille etc.). Or they might be "33" which would be Gironde (Bordeaux). Not sure if that helps...

I've never believed in the fake photo theory either.  If you look at the eyes of the two chaps crossing the road behind the blue car, you'll notice they are swivelled towards it - both seem to be having a discreet butcher's.  One would expect that, given the possible uniqueness of the car.  I'm sticking to the theory that it's a homemade special with humdrum Ford or Triumph underpinnings.  There were dozens of cars of that nature in the sixties and many will be undocumented.  Even if there is existent paperwork for the blue car, it'll be in someone's loft rather than on the internet.
