Eddie Honda Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Maxi's are for winners, I had one, lent it to a twat who borrowed it to drive to scotland and never came back!I told you not to lend it to that cunt Lennon. He never brings anything back. I lent him a 9/16" King Dick spanner last year. Still hasn't brought it back! Lacquer Peel 1
eddyramrod Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Maxis are ace, Marinas are beyond awful.I've had one Maxi, and never will again. I've had several Marinas in assorted specs, and would at the right price. I suspect this means we suffer diverging views on these matters.....
danthecapriman Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Maxis are ace, Marinas are beyond awful. What!! Marinas are awesome! I'd love to have one. Only on this site could I get away with saying that.Mind you, I like Maxi's too. eddyramrod 1

I suspect this means we suffer diverging views on these matters.....I had a Marina in 1978 ..I broke it. Was a teenager and found out that it would only wheelspin in reverse gear. Sorry BL. Timewaster Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 As a teenager my dad had a maxi that was a pile even then. There was piss taken at school over my dad's maxi but I was saved by the ginger kid who's dad had a bright orange maxi. This was 1986 when the cool kids were shipped to school in a Sierra or mk2 Cav. I walked to school whatever the weather.
Longblackcoat Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 My sister's first car was a Maxi, and it was unbearably shite. Steering, brakes, gearbox......all enough to make me keep well away from BL products for life.
HillmanImp Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 I would love ago in one. Used to get driven around Littlehampton in a flower power hand painted one in the early 90s by some long haired dude whose name escapes me but have never driven one. Its amazing that it seemed reasonable to try selling these at the same time as Vauxhall was punting on the new Cavalier. I realise there were being run off at the time but the difference between them is amazing. These really are from a different age.
lisbon_road Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 Trying to remember - weren't they knocked out at about £2500 when a normal car was about £4k? This is from memory mind.
Guest Lord Sward Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 My Gaffa, BL dealer extraordinaire, said they sold consistently throughout their life. When The End was announced, he stock piled a few in anticipation of a 'rush'. Sure enough, there was and he did very well from them. BL discounted the blighters while he found no need to negotiate on the RRP to the loyal followers. It was the Ambassador he said was a joke in the age of the Sierra. ShiteRider 1
theorganist Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 I have had three (although one I never got on the road). The gearbox was nowhere near as bad as people and road tests of the time make out. They are roomy, comfortable, handle well, the steering is a bit low geared and heavy at low speed but feels good on the open road and is not heavy on the move. I do want another but have no space/too many cars to fix and little money at the moment!
Guest Lord Sward Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 Oh, and give me a Maxi over a Marina ANY day of the week.
HH-R Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 Not driven a maxi, but is the gearchange any worse than a modern cable change car?
keef Posted November 26, 2017 Posted November 26, 2017 Anyone keep any photos? Is it this one? :- http://www.austinmaxiclub.org/gallery/gallery043.htm
