Dirty Diesel VAG Pineapple roof rack black smoke

At least the tide seems to be turning against diesel, which is about time, though I disagree with calls for a mass scrappage scheme.

So how else do you propose to get rid of diesel engines? By not making any more? Lorries and buses are the worst offenders anyway.

Whatever replaces a diesel as the next big thing will probably have some catastrophic weakness that is discovered in 10 years time, and the cycle will continue. Petrol cars will kill the birds, hydrogen cars will give you cancer, and someone will invent a car that runs on grass cutting but it'll turn out that the fumes inflate your head like that illness on Theme Hospital.

EGR reduces NOx. NOx isn't tested in the MOT.

Not something that we really should be breathing in at any concentration.

That's not taking to account the effect of NOx in high density areas and looking at a global scale. NOx maybe bad for the environment (climate change), but it's just as bad for our health along with all the other stuff they spew out. Yet we have many thousands of hazardous chemical generators sitting in high population density areas (i.e. towns and cities) everyday making everyone in that area inhaling it all.

In 50yrs time, we'll look back and find it crazy that we pumped out so much harmful gases literally right around large amounts of people. Just like smoking around others (and especially children) has become taboo - yet not so long ago you could smoke in a restaurant and a bit further back you could smoke in a aircraft!

Even more so that those that are most affected are children. It so happens that a young child head is pretty close to the height above the ground that car exhausts are, making it even worse.

Don't get me wrong, I love driving and I also drive around Bristol - so I am one of the guilty parties too (but I do cycle in to work vast majority of the time though). However when you realise how harmful exhaust fumes are, then start to think what is actually happening everyday, does it not all seem just a bit crazy?

There is a time and a place for cars, cities and towns really aren't it. Everyway you look at it, its daft. Inefficient use of space both on the road & parking, storage, pollution, easy to become lazy & unhealthy, wasting resources in making, running & repairing, etc, etc.

Travelling long distances, cars make a lot more sense - especially when transporting multiple occupants. That also has the benefit of the pollution being spread out more in sparsely populated areas and unlikely to be collecting & trapping in pockets.

Electric cars may move the pollution problem elsewhere (I.e. power generation), however it's easier to keep control on emissions of a couple of big emitters vs (literally) millions of small emitters. Still doesn't get over the inefficiencies of single person car transport.

Which reminds me, I need to put a reminder in my phone to take my (not so) eco-friendly v6 in to the garage (which is in Bristol centre) tomorrow...

EGRs work properly for as little as 20,000 miles from new, if chugging around a big city or with old person Sunday driving styles. As they start to fail, and as they clog up the engine's breathing apparatus, emissions get worse.

They're cheap, nasty add-ons to try and partially solve a serious problem - there are better ways of doing it.

Talking of emissions, given so many journeys are sub 5 mile and the country's sitting just a few degrees above freezing for half the year, should official tests take account of this? Cars intended as shopping trolleys would be better off with air cooling for almost instant working temperatures, rather than a lump of block and a gallon of water to heat. And ban big engines from cities, full stop.

Let us not forget that 62.75% of statistics are made up on the spot !

It's all of the pineapple being picked up through the air intake. Unlike old suitcases or those red four wheeled child's cart things, it doesn't burn cleanly and leaves residue all over the back bumper.A large bore exhaust helps with this.

pedant moment ---------- NOx is not the same as Nitrous Oxide

Blame it on the cows, stupid grass eating methane producing lumps.

I like cows, I also like milk, cheese and the occasional steak. Damn.
