Hmm. I've just been offered a '98 Volvo S80 T6 for plenty cheapness. It's in Hull, with no MOT or Tax, but it's a full spec job, allegedly mint, and in the budget provided I can cock it thorugh an MOT with no major issues. Should I?275 bhp in a £500ish FWD Volvo has to be Autoshite dunnit?

It's only an option.... and to be fair, anything vaguely amusingly quick for under a grand is likely to be utterly shagged, a total ball ache to work on and have monumentally expensive bits anyway...

I know you said you prefer a manuel gearbox....(No not Spanish built)

That'll be manual then matey!

Well that was fuckin' scary. Blokes just came for the Transit. Genuine Pikeys! Paid in genuine cash! Actually insured it before they left.Weirdly enough they were pretty nice. I managed to complete the deal without once saying "periwinkle blue with the scatter cushions".Jesus. They made Mickey from Snatch look like Mother Bleedin' Theresa!I need some coffee!Keep up the good work folks!

Didn't know there was a T6! How about an older hot Volvo that may be in budget without having to be shagged....850 T5?? Or did T5 only come in with the V70? What was the hot Volvo before the 850, or wasn't there one?

The 850 T5 was the first proper 'hot' Volvo, as they were going into touring car racing. They did do turbocharged versions of the 740, 760, 780, 440 and 480. But there blurb on them was that the turbocharger improved safety by improving midrange punch for overtaking. I guess the older 264 (V6 engine shared with Peugeot and Renault) was the older 'hot' one. With the modern range they did a 850 T5, and a T5R which were very fast indeed, the S80 had a T6 and a T6 Biturbo which were rapid. The S40 had a T4 for its hot version.

Were there not hot versions of the V70 & V40? (especially considering they were police weapons, well the V70 was / is anyway). Also there is the S60R. Predictably I have a model of one. Quite expensive for a non German medium executive car at about £37k

IIRC, in the mid 80s Volvo also produced a 240 Turbo, which proved useful in the WTCC/ETCC until the Sierra Cosworth was homologated.

Yes there was, the V70/S70 T5/R and a V40 T4. The S60 replaced the S70 when the new (almost current) shape V70 came out.

Hmm. The bloke with the S80 is going to give me a definate answer at the weekend. That just ain't good enough.I might even up the budget to £850 the way things are going. The BNP reg'd Omega Elite seems to be my best option at the moment, but I'd be wanting a bit of a chip from £795 on it.Why is it that whenever I'm trying to flog something like this the bloody things are all over the place (for pennies), but when I want to buy one they're harder to find than Osama wassisface or the price has jumped to a billion quid?List of current probables seems to be Omega 3.0 Elite or MV6, Ovlov T5 or 2.5T, Saab 9-5 turban, or maybe a Jag or summat. I'll have to ask about in the trade, only problem is, even traders try and stay away from the kind of barge I tend to like wafting about in.

Hmm, that Omega looks very tasty. I personally wouldn't be able to stand the fuel bill, but they are super comfy wafty wafty. They're going on my 'list'.

I thought the S60 was smaller than the V70 & not just because the latter is an estate. I took the S80 to be the saloon variant of the V70 & assumed that there was no S70 because it wouldn't sound very good, forgetting there used to be an S70. V90 is the one that puzzles me as to where it fits in the range! :?

It's just, calling it V90 suggests it was a cut above anything else in the range!

I'd go for that ... apart from the fact its green, the number plate adds up to 13 and the battlestar galactica mileage... nice motor..

V90 is simply the very final incarnation of the long-running 700/900 series. Pretty damned rare beasts. None on Ebay at the mo and only this one for £495 on Auto Trader

That'd be a bit of a pig if you'd found your perfect motor in all but the reg plate! "Oh yes, well I'd love to proceed with the sale, I really would, but I can't ya see because I've just realised the number plate adds up to 13, so I'm going to have to pass on this one I'm afraid!" Vendor: "You're avin a larf aren't you?!" :o

Ticks nearly all the boxes. FWD is a bad thing, but this should be amusing if nothing else. My top bid was £700.01 which was the absolute tops I was going to pay for it, and the reserve was obviously £700 so I'm not unhappy.

Will report as things unfold...

231 miles later.I am one happy, happy bunny. Not a mark on it inside or out other than a light scratch on one of the alloys. Wheels need balancing and it could do with an oil change, one of the climate control servos seems to squeak occasionally and the washer bottle sender is kaput but I think (and I'm in the trade) that this may well be the best car I've bought for myself as a cheapo in 4 or 5 years.Managed 29 mpg average in it as well, but it has been immensely foggy all the way back, I doubt I'll average that much again.
