Older driver insurance - recommendations

I've just been chatting to my neighbour Billy, he's in his early 70s but is far from infirm.

His insurance is up for renewal in the next couple of weeks, and despite an almost perfect driving career he's being quoted £500+ to insure his '09 Kia Magentis 2.0. He did get 3 points recently (SP30), but they're his first points ever. His last accident was in 1962. His car is garaged overnight and he does about 6,000 miles a year.

Any recommendations for insurers for older drivers? Saga are shit, he says, their prices are high.

I'm 66 and have been told that premiums do rise after 70.  Something to do with a tendency to drive by feel.  My 205 automatic costs £160 fully comp (inc. max no-claims 9yrs) for 12,000 miles with Legal and General who appear to farm out some business to Sabre.  The Stellar (1988) is on a classic policy with Sureterm - 8,000 miles and about £150.  No points or accidents.

Saga shouldn't be expensive, they insure SWMBO's 3 litre Outback for about £202 fully comp, protected, LPG conversion etc, and they didn't take the piss at car change time and for the third i think time running the renewal has been sensibly priced...however we don't claim for anything if at all possible, even windscreens i get a local indy to supply and fit, they might say such things don't affect you're NCD but i suspect they do effect premiums, our renewals this year have been stupidly cheap so we've stayed with both companies, my own renewals were about £50 cheaper than any search could come up with..Cornmarket formerly Adelaide (HGV PSV and IAM specialists).

Has he done a standard search on the Meerkat or similar and see what pops up...please not that Go Compare one cos the sooner they go bust or fuck their advertising agency off the better.

Course they'll be more expensive next year cos govt needs some income for expenses wars and the coming referendum result fiddle.

After he has a quote go to this link and get a the Post Office quote and they will give the same insurance cover for £50 less. The faff is having to pay then the PO insurance ion full then waiting for the refund of the difference + £50.

What good is home insurance for a car?

Try Stirling Moss insurance aka Peter james?

Sabre's quote: £7,934.13

Wow!  My renewal from them via Legal and General was received yesterday.  I've just checked that it was per annum and not per week.  It was £169 last year, so £9 cheaper this year.  If I'm ever tempted to buy a Magentis, I'll check insurance first  :-D

I am not as old but over 50 and saga are as cheap as the cheapest I could find on comparison sites for the third year running cannot fault them no waiting in queues for hours to speak to someone either to change cars so gets my vote

I've passed on details of Peter James to my neighbour, hopefully they'll be able to sort him out. But judging by the Sabre quote he's doing OK with his £500 premium...!

I`m 70, and I`m with Age UK. Premium for a Ford Focus C-max 1.6 petrol with full no claims bonus was £240. I pay it monthly and they do not charge any interest on it. I was with Saga on my Synergie at £220 per year............ they upped it to £700+. When I questioned it they told me (politely) to take it or leave it.

Will the opposite of the 'young people putting someone older on the driver list' improve things, as long as he is not the only driver it might dilute the risk!

Saga are curiously very hard sell with an apparently frightening finance package.

My mother, gave up driving at 70 and rather disturbingly bought another car at 75 which she insured with Aviva.

I'm not sure what she pays but me, my brother and his daughter are all on the policy?

I had fun getting cover on the Land Rover last year as, horrror of horrors, I actually wanted to drive it, and not only that, use it for work as well. The company I've been with for years would reluctantly cover it, third party only, for over £700 and not happy with that I shopped around. Did eventually get fully comp for a lot less, but with a 12,000 mile a year restriction, fortunately I finish work next week so won't need business cover and hopefully my mileage will come down. Done nearly 8,000 miles in it since September, mainly because the Smart died in December and it's been pretty much my only useable transport since then. Fortunately petrol is reasonably cheap as I reckon that's about £2k in petrol.

Not sure if being retired will immediately make me a higher risk, so I look forward to finding out.

Tell him to get a quote NOT garaged but in driveway.  Often Cheaper. Because Statistics.

probably safer on the drive;  one of our locals drove her car from the garage, hit something on the way out then accelerated the other way through the back of the garage taking out the oil fired boiler on the way

I don't like this about premiums increasing after you reach 70 - about 200 days for me; it might take some serious persuasion to convince the wife that I should keep my M5  (even more serious persuasion than it already takes)

They were three times the best price I got (Admiral) for the GL420 - three years no claims, 50 yo, 20k miles, business use - £350. Saga were over £1k.
