Scrolling through Facebook the night before last and spot an ad for an infamous Scénic II with one months T&T on one of the buy and sell pages.

*renault anorak firmly on* it's got the VERY rare xenon headlights. Seller seems desperate. Let's see what happens.

Boom. She bites at the first offer. Wasn't really counting on that and didn't get to ask what the rest of the car is like past those £500 optional extra headlights....

Caught the bus the next afternoon for the 30 minute trip. Followed the directions she gave me and end up in Daisy and Onslow's estate. Walked into the cul de sac, I see the Scénic sitting looking filthy, spare wheel on and a nice crack in the back bumper. Approached cautiously to find the wife cleaning out the caravan.

She looked surprised I'd actually turned up, handed me the key card and disappeared back into the caravan. Cheers....

Jump into the Scénic. Child has removed her doll, FFS, that was worth another few quid. Card in, hit the start button.... Clickclickclick.

Battery flat. Onslow, who I presume was the husband, emerged from the caravan, fag in mouth, with a booster pack. At least there was now a little less chance of having to bus it back.

He attached the pack and she started first go, emitting a nice variety of warning beeps as she did so. Had a quick check to see if that missing alloy was in the boot, which it was, with a bald tyre, and we were good to go. I handed daisy £200 and she genuinely looked like she'd won the lottery. I suppose she had, a few quid and some mad bastard was taking her Scénic away at the same time.

Onslow then chose this moment to go through the faults that he "knows of". Blower doesn't work at all, battery sometimes goes flat, no idea if the miles are correct etc etc etc.

I don't care, as long as it gets home.

Waved goodbye and headed around the corner for a bit of familiarisation. Tried to load my new Enya CD but nah, the changer is jammed. Probably why it's half hanging outta the dash too.

Off we went, engine seems brilliant, clutch and gearbox fine. Steering unusually heavy, pulling nicely to the left and a great variety of clunks and knocks from the front wheels when turning lock to lock. One months MOT left, not sure it's guna be worth the effort.

It got home on the remaining bar of fuel. Time for a look around.

Quick look at the V5. 8 previous keepers and an accident

Add to this the fact that one of the doors won't shut properly, there's a mystery battery drain and a non-genuine key card that doesn't fully function (or have the emergency entry key blade cut) - it's a rather unsaleable car, even with a full test.

Quick think about all the common Scénic II failure parts that sell like hot cakes - parking brake - works, electric window regulators - 3 work, dephaser pulley - perfect, full set of good wheels, digital dash - perfect. It's worth a fortune in bits.

I called our MOT centres to check the mileage recorded at each test. It seemed to jump about all over the place indicating at least two dash changes, impossible to know the true mileage but it seemed in the 120k region.

Needless to say the past two days have been great fun.

Parking brake motor surprisingly easy to remove. Sits behinds the back drivers wheel and gets everything splashed up onto it - probably a contributor to their failure. Everything else coming apart ridiculously easily and going on eBay. I've made my money back already... And most of the stuff is still here.

Had a guy turn up earlier in a 1.6 Expression telling me hilarious tales of it stranding the wife and her sticking oil in the coolant reservoir and screen wash into the power steering reservoir.

The things you do in the impatience of waiting for your Laguna V6 Monaco to be delivered.

THOSE HEADLIGHTS THO!

looks like a result. Scrabo is a nice place too as I remember it. I like the previous chewing gum repair on that gouge.

Double bonus really as you got it for a good price and you've taken another one off the roads.

'Kinell, makes my Scenic look like a bargain despite having 100k more on the clock

Glad to see it's quite easy to monetise a breaker though

You're right, and the bus smelt like fish too.

I didn't think much of the plate but a friend says the MCZ ones are worth something. I don't see it tbh, but I will put it on retention just given it has nice numbers and may look ok on something in the future if nobody buys it. Feel free to make an offer!

Yeah that's a pretty cool plate actually - sounds like something you'd spray on carpets!

Posted

Rubbish price! Mine went for the same but in far better and working condition - just ask Kiltox! :P

A strip down was my backup plan and I'd easily got more, but it just felt wrong killing a perfectly good car like that.

Posted

Ah but no xenon headlights!! It was having those in the spares stash as the main objective.

You're thinking of your Visa, aren't you? ;)  I can see that working!

Aye it's worth feck all m8, I'll just take of yer hands so yer not worryin about it.

That is true, but 4 months MOT tho.

That looks to be the same trim level - Privilege but with all the boxes ticked. What year is it? Kiltox Scenic is 2004 and has the CD changer under the front passenger seat - rather than in the dash.

Can't have been a Scenic II, they're all electrically assisted - with a motor in the actual column.

This Laguna V6 Monaco sounds interesting

May have been the product of red wine + eBay watched item ending reminder.

Correct Sic, that was the wife's. His Scénic II was at home dead needing the stuff he bought. He did joke about them having a Scénic each and being into S&M...

This one was 2004, it has the upgraded Cabasse system - another optional extra. With that the changer was moved to the dash and the amp under the back seats. It also had the climate control option ticked. Privilège trim too. Keyless entry and start doesn't work with the shitty knock off key card, has to be inserted. Another factor in its demise, that's a favourite feature of mine.

Posted

My red Laguna has the same CD player as that. Does that mean it has another box of tricks elsewhere in the car with an amp and a radio reciever in it?

Posted

Yup! Lives under the back seats. I have the dash unit out of that Scénic and the radio still works, so it is purely a cd changer and control unit.

Posted

Thats interesting. I want an AUX input into the stereo on the red Laguna, I think there is a way of connecting one into that box of tricks beneath the seat.

er no :P and with a bit of luck i might get a w plate :P
