Cortina GL - now home with bits missing

Must be a thing about Fords. My old Orion 1.6i Ghia was used to courier drugs from Newcastle to Hawick. I really wish I'd filled out that v5,

4 pages into this thread and not one Onslow remark....shame. It was Onslow's car that made me like Mk4 'tinas. I still even have a half-baked plan one day to paint up a Mk4 like his annoy people - I remember about 9-10 years ago the actual one, VSD 389S, used in KUA was found on some wasteland, looking as it did in the series, but nobody saved it so it  eventually went for scrap :(

Looks like a nice bit of kit though. Apart from general tidy-up, what else have you got planned for it?

Sort out a few mechanical niggles and then just enjoy it for this year really - see how I get on with it and then further improvements can come from there.

Pretty much what I've done with my E23's.

You've probably already seen these but before the respray and it was fucked about with it used to have side mouldings.

There's a chap on Facebook called Aaron Jacobs who breaks Cortinas for the parts and has shitloads of bits, it could be worth messaging him for the mouldings and badges.

Posted

It's certainly had a fair selection of front grilles over the last few years! Odd how they'd have it resprayed but give it a "tide-mark of doom" front valance rather than do it in red.

Posted

I don't like the mouldings I prefer the strip it looks cleaner. The black front valence is a period look back in 1993 they all sported that look.

Posted

I'm uncertain about the rubbing strips and whether they should make a return or not.

I've re-aligned the n/s front door this morning and it now sits pretty well, could maybe do with a slight tweak to increase the gap between the door and wing, but it no longer looks as though it's not closed properly. This means I can get some more photos of it later.

Sourcing a standard backbox is impossible it seems, so I'm off to see a mate at an exhaust centre next Saturday who will make me something. I quite like the fruity sound of the Pinto sans backbox, so something to maintain a similar sound would be ideal.

This is the only shape Cortina I can get excited abut, probably because they seem to have had the highest rate of attrition. This one looks mega - let's see some interior shots

Here she is - I'm aware the Cortina badge is in the wrong place, the previous keeper put it on but it will be moved when I get chance. I also have 1.6 GL to go on too.

Oh and my Cortina order of favourites is 3-5-4-2-1

Very nice. Paint the valences, fix the numbers plates and that could be a really nice car.

I thought GL had a rev counter?

Posted

I'm not sure - she doesn't have loads in the way of spec to be fair.

Number plates have already been ordered :)

Posted

I know! Especially since he a) must have taken it off from the right place b )managed to put the Ford badge in the right place!!

Ford didn't really start giving you a rev counter in anything but Ghia and sporty models until the late 80s. Even the D plate Granada GL I drove as a taxi didn't have a rev counter.

ming bags. I'd like to put the base clocks back into mine as it's got a rev counter but no wiring for a rev counter so it just looks lame.

Posted

That looks really good, you can't beat the simplicity of a Cortina.

Rev counters are easy to wire in, only one additional wire is required from the rev counter to the negative side of the coil.

Only the Ghia and S derivatives had a rev counter as standard.

On the MK4 were the badges fixed with pins rather than tape, causing water ingress into the boot and the associated rot problems?

53421 for me.

I thought MK IV's had their clock in the floor console and a Cortina "coat of arms" on the dash where your enormo-clock is?"

And my Cortina hit-list order would be 5-4-3-2-1 probably because I'm a philistine.

The models with rev counters had the clock in the centre console, just forward of the gear lever.  The base model MK 3 that didn't have a clock had the embossed coat of arms between the gauges and the speedometer, the base model MK4 didn't even have the coat of arms, just a blank circle.
