My mate Royce found me a Mazda MX5 Auto. I've been looking on and off for at least a year. It was a mk 2 and bloody green, neither of which I wanted! I wanted a mk1 in any colour BUT green!

Anyway, he found more details for me and it sounded good - too good to be honest. So I spoke to the chap selling it and it turns out he's old, falling apart even faster than me and being forced to give up driving as his eyesight is going.

So I was worth a risk. Insured it for £205 fc without even seeing it and went off tonight to collect... Royce picked me up at 6:00 in his MX5 MK2 10th anniversary. Drove down to Plymouth, gassing all the way and found the place with no problem and at the first attempt! Anyone that knows me will attest to the fact that I have no sense of direction and couldn't find my arse with both hands!

The car was parked outside and, sod me, it looked bloody lovely!

Hardtop on it, and we started checking it over, no rust! Sills, wheelarches all perfect. Colour me happy.... Oh and the colour. It's not just green, it's also blue or purple - flip paint! From the factory no less! Imported into the soggy UK in 2007 so not had that much time to rot away. Dave (the seller) came out, lovely guy, totally fucked, can hardly breath and sight is not a strong point anymore either... Anyway, he opened the car and Royce went to work checking it out - he's an MOT tester and mechanic as well as an MX5 owner so knew where to look, and did! All good, not a trace of the dreaded rust in the chassis legs/sills/anywhere. All fancy paint under the bonnet as well!

Strut brace, leather, A/C (works!) leccy windows,  and receipts for new suspension, struts and springs, new discs and pads front and rear, full service, new coil packs and leads, tracking and alignment - £1701!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Also, four new tyres (Autogrip death masters :(  ) new exhaust,  new cat,  and on and on...

Also included, a tonneau (sp?) cover, another full cover, a Krooklock and keys,  the old back lights, the old front lights, a load of books, a sat nav.... it just goes on and on!

Didn't bother with a test drive, didn't try and chip the price, just coughed up, did the paperwork ad got out of there before he could change his mind! Oh and he knew what the car was worth, knew he was selling it cheap and was glad it was going to a 'good' home....

It drives perfectly. Goes well, everything works even the Air con is cold, heated windows and seats, the only thing that lets it down is the cigar lighter doesn't function - spoils the whole car! :)

This is Royce inspecting the lack of rust and whinging 'cos his car has got some!

Pictures taken in McDonalds car park in Plymouth where I treated the lad to a slap up meal (big Mac and chips with a strawberry milkshake) and bought the dogs a burger each for when I got home.

Filled Royces car with gas and this little bugger.

Had a nightmare getting out of Plymouth but otherwise, no dramas, just really good fun.

N,B, I know how much Royce made on the deal as he told me and I saw the old chap hand him the cash - £50. So with that and a tank of fuel I think he was adequately compensated and I don't begrudge him a penny as he found the car and I am well chuffed!

Oh yes, and when I got home, I could hear Chester howling before I even got out of the car! Apparently, he hadn't stopped for two hours! The babysitter was NOT happy!

No, I set off like there was an egg shell under the throttle! Wanted to give a 'good impression' to the old lad!

Anyway, it's an auto so I'm not sure it'll do 11s?

The hardtop rattles like fuck and seems a bit loose at the front but the interior is dry... convertible roof is new (of course!) mohair and new glass screen. The old lad has only had it a year or so and we reckon he's spent over 4 grand on it!

Such a shame for him. But a bargain for me. Feel a bit guilty but he set the price and I didn't try to get the price down and he stuck all the stuff in the car to get rid of it all! He couldn't be arsed with eBay and the hassle just wanted rid and space for his mobility scooter he's going to buy... already talking about getting one to go faster - 12 MPH is the goal!

Lovely. One of them may tempt me away from my 75 one day. My brother lives in Plymouth and i can confirm that it's a pain to get out of. Nice ,very nice.

does not compute!

  • C= 100
  • 1= 1
  • M= 1000
  • X= 10
  • V= 5

Well done XT!!!!! Sounds like it all came just right for you with this one. Did you feel a twinge of guilt for publicly berating your mate on here for allegedly 'doing you over'?

An mx5? With your infamously crippled body? This is going to cost you in physio!

Sure, at £35 per ticket you owe me £105 :)

Not selling (but we all say that!) as it was bloody cheap for what it is and rust free so I can 'afford' to use it as a second car. Until the sun shines that is....

Other things I've noticed with it: it has a fancy alarm (two fobs!) which even opens the boot off the fob but when you set off, it locks all the doors! Handy that as no one is going to mug you while in a traffic jam when the roofs off are they :)

To be honest, I am made up with it. I didn't want a mk2, but It's nice and in lovely condition so that makes up for it - I have now had the set: MK1, MK2 and MK3.

Nice autos are hard to find and when you do, most of them are 1600cc. This is an 1800 and does go well. I reckon it's worth 2-2.5 thousand judging from adverts on eBay/Autotrader etc and I paid a grand for it. The old lad knew it was worth £2000 as well but doesn't want the hassle. He wants a mobility scooter so I offered him mine (free and delivered) but he didn't want it 'cos it's 'too slow lad!' Mines a fully legal 4MPH thing....

I've got to go and empty the boot out: it is packed to the top with goodies! It needs a wash as well. Then the dilemma of which car to take the dogs out in - Dollop for comfort and ease for Phoebe, or the MX for Chester to sit and woo-woo at eveyone as he goes by?
