The Moog Posted March 7, 2016 Author Posted March 7, 2016 Knobs seem like hens teeth. Tried 6 different volvo breakers, there are some on ebay but hey are shipped from the states, otherwise £150 for a new one!
Tetleysmooth Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 Will, there's a bloke over on the Volvo forum, Gatos is his username. He's got thousands of bits for these V40's, trays and trays of the stuff.Would you like me to pm him for you?Just tell me what you need.
The Moog Posted March 7, 2016 Author Posted March 7, 2016 Thanks for the offer Captain Smooth. The only bit needed was the gear lever knob so should be fine for now.
rainagain Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 Re: drop links, I read on here someone's ingenious solution to getting them off was to simply use a large breaker bar to sheer the nut off, by tightening it rather than trying to undo it and having to deal with the spinning ball joint. Never tried it myself but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work The Moog and CGSB 2
The Moog Posted March 7, 2016 Author Posted March 7, 2016 Might try that ... or fire. Any recommendations for a decent blow torch? Cheaper the better,
Lacquer Peel Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 I have nothing to compare it to but my 'GoSystem' blow torch has got me out of trouble a few times, no complaints.
The Moog Posted March 9, 2016 Author Posted March 9, 2016 http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showpost.php?p=1843916&postcount=274 If that doesn't work I'll give you a unit with code at the next meet.I owe you a coffee or beer! Code came through for free and so we now have toons. Springer, Lacquer Peel and Richard 3
The Moog Posted March 15, 2016 Author Posted March 15, 2016 Starlet is back in action! A visit from a lovely man in an orange van and I have the keys back. Need to do an oil change before it's next crail run.
The Moog Posted March 16, 2016 Author Posted March 16, 2016 Finest swift bits have arrived.... It's a small Asian hatchback and the part is made from plastic so it comes from ....... India! Lacquer Peel 1
Richard Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Re: drop links, I read on here someone's ingenious solution to getting them off was to simply use a large breaker bar to sheer the nut off, by tightening it rather than trying to undo it and having to deal with the spinning ball joint. Never tried it myself but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work I think this method might just strip the thread, that's what happened when I used an impact gun to do mine up. My preferred solution if they don't have flats is to use an open ended spanner to dislocate the joint, then grip the ball with a pair of mole grips.
Richard Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Drop links are easier to remove than they used to be because they don't last long enough to get rusty. anonymous user 1
The Moog Posted March 16, 2016 Author Posted March 16, 2016 Cheers chaps, will try that when I get 5 minutes.
The Moog Posted March 17, 2016 Author Posted March 17, 2016 Got some time and sunshine today to play. Cheeky shot of the youngstersAnd the more mature members First off the v40 was still letting in a trickle of water so I iced the outer lightsThe indicators needed tangoingThen continued stripping interior. I think it is going to be a carpet out jobbie I need to work out how to remove the front seats without setting off airbags. The sound deadening is sopping wet so needs a good dry day. Swift has been running cold. Bonnet up. What a tiny battery Old thermostatDiagnosis -fucked New one didn't fit. A bit too big Will rectify that tomorrow. Tomorrow is clean xantia and oil change, before putting it up for sale. CGSB 1
Robson3022 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 I always thought that about the swift battery but it never failed to start it even after a couple of weeks!! Nice to see it getting some love!! The Moog 1
The Moog Posted March 17, 2016 Author Posted March 17, 2016 To remove seats without setting off airbags and tensioners I just disconnect the battery and go have a coffee. Come back to car half hour later and rip out the seats! Not failed me yet and I've plenty of experience with it Hbol says there is a special clip you put in the side to stop it going off manually. Unsurprisingly both of mine are missing I didn't know if this is because it is side impact bags. Half tempted by the leather interior on eBay! But cash flow is a bit shit at moment.
twosmoke300 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Toyotas have non electrical pre tensioners that need to be switched into a safe mode before removing . blimp 1
The Moog Posted March 17, 2016 Author Posted March 17, 2016 Toyotas have non electrical pre tensioners that need to be switched into a safe mode before removing .It's for the Volvo v40. Supposed to be a red clip in the seat base that has gone walkabout.
The Moog Posted March 18, 2016 Author Posted March 18, 2016 Thermostat installed in the swift. Nice and toasty now New wiper blades. Drivers side one looked a little small, new one is a good few inches larger (fnarfnar) Cavcraft, CGSB, HMC and 2 others 5

The Moog Posted March 23, 2016 Author Posted March 23, 2016 Put the interior back into the v40 and one of the seat back rest bolts has cross threaded. Fucksticks. Looked at removing the door in the swift and one of the screws holding the door on is rusted tight. And is at the bottom of the pull close. Fucking cars.
The Moog Posted March 31, 2016 Author Posted March 31, 2016 Serviced the swift in readiness for Scottish trip this evening after the departure of lespace. Aided by my furry apprentice Its great not to have to remove plastic covers etc. New and old Not so sparky No1 cylinder plug was covered in a grey deposit. Off with the cap I love neat touches that help things along. Firing order plus rotation Aside from a dodgy HT lead (set on order) all done in 20 minutes for less than £30. Runs a lot smoother and idles better. Next job was the drivers door handle. Previously the scene of an attempted break inFollowing 320 advice I took a chiesel to the stuck screw and got the door card off. Handle was one of those jobs that you need 15 hands for, so no pictures. New one fitted. Took the opportunity to look at the dropping window. It has broken a metal tab at the bottom. If I could use a sparkly stick it is a two second fix. Will see what the options are. phil_lihp, Twiggy, CGSB and 2 others 5
Robson3022 Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Glad to see it getting some love. Service intervals were obviously followed religiously......
The Moog Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 Bonus is that it has gone from 37mpg up to 48mpg.... So that is essentially free money! Robson3022 and Lacquer Peel 2
Robson3022 Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Wow!!! Ok can you send me an additional £50 please as that wasn't part of the deal!!! Paul says he got the letter from the DVLA the other day so thanks for not being a dodge pot and running up parking fines etc!!!! Lacquer Peel and The Moog 2
Robson3022 Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 I can't believe after the attempted break in they didn't actually get it either! The Moog 1
Bucketeer Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 More jobs seemingly done with ease. You're due a PITA full day of little achievement soon. How did the apprentice do? Manage to stop him eating the old filter?
The Moog Posted April 8, 2016 Author Posted April 8, 2016 More jobs seemingly done with ease. You're due a PITA full day of little achievement soon. How did the apprentice do? Manage to stop him eating the old filter? He was very well behaved, managed not to lick or eat anything bad. Thanks for that bucket man! Today was such a thing. Decided that the sun had got his hat on, I would fit new door locks to the swift. The passenger one works with some wiggling and drivers doesn't. Locks were £12 for both including 2 keys. Drivers side knocked off with ease, I set sail for the passenger side. Take 1 door, with funky trim. Add some trim toolsA dash of rusty screwsA smattering of impact driverGas mark2 for 10 seconds and success Then off with the door carTo behold the promised landDoor handle out and whip the lock outThat was the were the warning signs began. The outer handle cracked so added that to the buy list. Took the opportunity to sort out the window. It has been dropping off its rails. You can sort of see it is out of it guideI was expecting a cracked runner like the drivers side. Not cracked so slotted back in and lubed Job fixed. Slides easily and is slipperyer that a lard coated eel. Handle back in and the end is in sight. Then it all went wrong. The inner handle cracked and the rods fell out. I spent an hour trying to get it back together. Then chucked tools in the car and left it for today. Volvo is booked in for an MOT tomorrow. Expecting a fail on drop links and perhaps crack in windscreen. Bucketeer 1
