Kiltox's 1997 Rover 216 Cabriolet (30/05 - Fixery)

The last owner didn't strike me as one who'd have driven it hard either, which could explain its life.

Saying that my grandad wouldn't either but that's having trouble at 75k odd.

Renault bullshit of the day

Limp mode in the Trafic when driving at about 40mph - injection/glow plug light came on. Cleared after an ignition cycle.

No generic OBD codes stored but I haven't had my proper code reader on it yet

More bollocks from the van lead to me taking off the EGR valve and checking it out - it was absolutely rammed solid with carbon

Broke the electrical connector because I'm a clumsy fucker so a new EGR was bought at £45 and fitted today - seems to have stopped the limp mode / juddering and it runs a lot better!

Still running well so I'm hopeful that the EGR replacement has cured it

Managed to break the self cancelling when changing the indicator stalk, not sure what I've done or not done but it's annoying me!

Renault bullshit of the day...

FTP!  No start in the Trafic this morning, not quite sure what's going on but the STOP light illuminated and the check engine light was flashing.

Didn't have time to fuck around with it but that's tonight's job

Camshaft sensor codes and MAF codes kicking around - cleared them to see if they come back

Scenic MOT tomorrow - place your bets now!

:D

She's a good old reliable* beast. The type of car thats an underdog, which all the hallmarks of being utter crap (mid 2000 Renault, high spec, automatic transmission family bus with high miles on the clock) but keeps on giving while taking abuse.

I suspect a lot of the reason is that it's been driven gently for years and all problems taken care of before they became major.

Advisory notice item(s)

nearside rear Brake pipe slightly corroded (3.6.B.2c)

offside rear Brake pipe slightly corroded (3.6.B.2c)

nearside front Shock absorber has a light misting of oil (2.7.3)

nearside rear Shock absorber has slight corrosion to the casing (2.7.2a)

offside rear Shock absorber has slight corrosion to the casing (2.7.2a)

Jeez tho, looks like they were trying hard to find stuff to fail!

Is it replacing the FiL Picasso?

I assume the steering rack still making its clicking noise?

I'm glad I didn't rip bits off it and scrap it. Despite the hassle in trying to sell it whole on Gumtree, I knew it would be a utter waste to strip it when it seems a perfectly good car.

Not too shabby for a £220 motor ;)

Always a good thing when a new MOT cert is in yer mitts :)

It most likely will replace the Picasso yes.

To be fair to the tester, at least one of those advisories carries over from last year and it was F1 Autocentres who I'd always assume would be fail happy given the nature of their business

Van doing what it does (no not breaking down!)

Anyone need any slightly* used carpet tiles?

Posted

My garage floor would love them :)

Posted

Van needs a new clock spring - I've ordered a complete steering wheel with airbag which should freshen things up a little bit because the 203k wheel is fucking minging

Posted

Anyone got access to a wiring diagram for a Trafic/Vivaro/Primastar? Horn sounds constantly unless I pull the fuse, started doing so after I fucked around with the indicator stalk again and still does so despite changing the squib

Posted

Van is still fucking about - when trundling along at a constant speed with steady throttle input the revs will drop like the turbo has just turned itself off - occasionally coupled with the check injection light coming on

Need to read the codes again

Posted

Need to get back to assembling the Panda - the following still needs to be done:

Attach rocker cover with new gasket

Fit new sump

Replace timing belt

Install new clutch with the best of the 2 used flywheels

Replace all coolant hoses including metal pipe to water pump which has a hole from corrosion

Install engine

Install new radiator

Potentially replace most of the front suspension

Check and adjust or replace rear brakes (handbrake is shite)

FUCKING EVERYTHING

FTFY.

Stuck my code reader on the van and it has an intermittent code DF195 - Camshaft sensor/engine speed consistency - excessive air gap between sensor and toothed wheel"

Scenic has gone to a new home but I'll probably see it quite often - still soldiering on at nearly 155k miles :)

216 Cabriolet replaced it but is being sold next week - I'm buying a MK3 Golf automatic from a certain shiter so that my other half can finally resume learning to drive!

Van is running well after cleaning the crankshaft sensor - almost too well!

Panda is still in bits but I have almost everything I need to reassemble it now, might be some updates on it in a couple of weeks time!

Removed the spinning roof vent from the van tonight - it lets water in and I thought it was making a roaring noise that sounds a lot like a bad wheel bearing at 50+ mph

Leak hopefully gone. Noise remains.

That'll be a bearing then...... They're in the discs on these I believe like the Scenic however the rear brake discs are only a year old at most aparrently, find it hard to believe the bearing has worn out already!

Posted

Seems to be some VERY cheap discs about which just can't have a bearing in at the money they're going for - I wonder if some idiot put 200k mile bearings into new discs.....

Posted

Golf is here and is going well so far but could do with a bit of maintenance to be at its best

Water pump I think has noisy bearings so will be replaced along with the aux belt that drives it - might change the timing belt too although I'll have a nose through the paperwork to see when it was last changed

Rear wheel bearing advisory on the last MoT and I think it has a slight rumble - will change both because they're cheap and easy

Radiator hoses are 20 years old and a bit crusty so will go when I do the water pump

Rocker cover gasket is weeping

Front wing on the drivers side is rotten, not sure whether I'll find a good used one in the right colour or paint a new one (less than £30 for new!)

Rear tyres have seen better days but will do for now

Glovebox handle is AWOL

Sounds bad but the parts for these are insanely cheap and they're piss easy to work on :). Will service it and put some kind of rustproofing gunk in the sills too!
