Kiltox's 1997 Rover 216 Cabriolet (30/05 - Fixery)

Think I have a self healing Renault - it now gives me a reassuring* "OIL LEVEL OK" when I start the engine

EDIT - it did, once this morning and has resumed the broken state

Posted

Bit closer to having a working Panda - started cleaning up the new engine today.

Good job I'm replacing the sump - the plug is seized solid which I assume is the reason it wasn't drained of oil upon removal (ask me how I know..... grrrr)

Remember that Audi that started this thread?

It will return!

Should be sufficient to bodge up the exhaust enough so I can see if it has an acceptable amount of power again!

Is that a trick of the light, or have you just found several of those 'Humbrol' enamel tins of glow in the dark paint?

One primed rocker cover

Panda joined this week by this shite that has been cluttering my yard for too long and needs a new steering rack before I can take it somewhere for a weldathon

MX5 steering rack is ready to go back on. Panda sump almost painted so not far away from the engine being ready either!

Provisionally bought a Corsa C at auction tonight but that'll be a quick tidy up and sell on job so not much good to this thread!

Scenic still works, failed to start once today but no drama

Posted

Looks like I'm bringing a Corsa home tomorrow - hope it's more fit for the journey than the Panda was!!

Posted

Scenic bullshit of the day - "TOP UP OIL LEVEL" (fair enough, really must check it) and "CHECK AIRBAG"

Nice and rainy this morning I notice

Posted

That's because it knows that tomorrow you've owned it for a month.

The oil level could be the oil sensor having an intermittent connection/intermittently broken. As you might expect, the dipstick is in a silly place. Accessible, but you have to reach all the way down the front to near the sump to pull a 15cm long dipstick out. I suppose shouldn't moan as at least Renault fitted one.

Will be interested to see what code has sprung up for the Airbags. I guess probably just intermittent connectors under a seat as per usual with these sort of things.

How many miles has the old girl done now?

Got the Corsa back and all sorted?

Posted

Just under 152k. I've done around 1100 miles in it so mustn't grumble, 18p a mile and decreasing

Corsa is back and isn't quite as nice as I thought (I looked at 6 so got a bit mixed up). Mechanically seems fine, needs a thermostat/coolant temp sensor, coolant flush and some front drop links but that's trivial. Need to sort out the mileage display too but I think you were right about it being a bulb - the photo on the auction website made it look like it lit up blank but it doesn't.

Interior needs a deep clean and general tidy up - I suspect the garage it was traded into used it as a runaround for their mechanics because it's that kind of dirty.

Airbag and oil level have fixed* themselves.

Wonder if it's getting damp somewhere and getting upset?

Steams up like a bastard when it's rainy. Must check the pollen filter.

Posted

Airbag light went off to be fair but you might be right.....

Horn is weak as hell though so it equally might've just given up totally

Posted

Yep, fair weather car for sure

Anyone interested in buying my shite Audi once I've bodged the exhaust back on?  MOT Dec, 324k miles, only need a few hundred for it....

Posted

I'm looking forward to the Panda being sorted. Can we (well I) have a money shot of the high mileage odometer plz?

Posted

Of course but it'll need to wait until the engine is back in - don't want to confuse the ECU by powering it up with everything disconnected!!

Posted

For all their electrical woes, Renault ECU suppliers have done a very good job of hardening them. I regularly short the outputs to 12v, ground, inject noise, etc in them on the bench. They're usually disconnected from all sensors, sometimes connected and sometimes mis-wired too. At no point have they farted and locked up/died/done something wierd.

I guess Sagem/Bosch/Siemens/Delphi knew they were designing them to survive Renault wiring...

Decided the Scenic needs some loving so I've ordered a couple of window modules and will give it a good clean with the wet vac next weekend too. Might even continue fault finding the air con and look at how much of a pain sorting the oil level sensor would be! Really must find a replacement horn because the current one is woeful when it wants to work!

Corsa is pretty much done so it'll hopefully be gone soon (shiter discount available)

Picking up a 307SW 1.6HDi with injector issues soon.... Yikes

You should have stopped at 307, but you had to go on...

You fucking masochist.

You know, if I had more time I would make myself a hobby of buying the most famously unreliable heaps to see if I could fix them using some spanners and an internet.

1.6HDi and friends would be up the list, one with a blown turbo to see if it could ever be made to live again.

A £250 spears or reapers E46 320d.

Any modern Renault.

A Mercedes Vito with "some surface rust to sills"

Etc.

Luckily I've got threads like this where I can see what would happen if I did. Best of luck!

The Peugeot is so cheap I can't really pass it up (I could probably sell it's wheels for the cost of the car)

Still don't know why I do it to myself though

Posted

Quite impressed by these pressed metal number plates I ordered for a Corolla T Sport I'm either going to retail or use as a track toy, might order a set for the mighty Panda!

£18 on eBay
