Yeah I'm rolling on 17's as I prioritise looks over ride quality and longevity. I heard that these 17's are a bit fragile. Theyre not dented or owt, just out-of-round on the inner edges so I think I will see if they can be fixed before buying any more wheelz.

Posted

Probably cheaper to get some second hand ones. But then no guarantee that they'll be round either.

I'm running on 16s. But then the v6 they put in stiffer springs (because that lump of metal is so darn heavy), so any extra cushioning is a good thing.

I found that the red Gooner, on 16’s, had a vastly superior ride quality to this blue one, I mean really like chalk and cheese, I was amazed. This one is really nowt spesh at all, the Rover 623 soaks up the bumps better even with its generally unimpressive short-travel Honda suspension.

I do like this Gooner of course, but its suspension is very mediocre. You’d think there would have been someone amongst Renault’s chassis tuning people who would have said ‘this just isn’t good enough’ before it was all signed off. I deliberately bought decent Firestone rubber for it but it’s like giving a fat man a pair of expensive running shoes.

I've always been surprised that the RenaultSport department never got their hands on the Laguna. I can only assume the chassis is too floppy and big to get any decent handling out of it.

Left foot braking produces an easy to control sideways entry to roundabouts etc :-D

Been having some gooner problems this week. What sort? ELECTRICAL ONES of course. Twice i have been out to i to find the battery flatter than a kippers c0ck only 2 hours after parking up. I have fannied about with it a bit and taken to disconnecting the battery when parked!!!! This morning I had a proper look with the multimeter.

Turns out there is a 20 AMP drain on the flippin battery when the car is parked up!!!!! No lights are on or owt obvious.

Busted out the multimeter. Tried to do this earlier in the week only to find its internal battery was flat too FFS.

IMG_20161222_115510180.jpg

I found that removing the right-hand-most orange (40A) fuse from the engine bay fuse box caused the drain to go away. I have looked in the handbook and of course there is nothing in there telling you what each fuse does. The car still starts up and drives and the lights, heater etc works. I need to trace it and sort it though. Any tips from the shite community?

Remove it and see if it fires up/what works? 40a would presume something big and important though

You'll be glad to know the HBOL just says check the fusebox lid.

Heated rear screen? That's have a big draw I'd have thought, and not be immediately noticed if the fuse was removed?

Or headlight washers - they are a 40a fuse too according to Hooli's wiring diagram. In fact if I've read that right those are your only two candidates.

What year is your Laguna? I'm at work at the moment, but when I get home I can PM you some stuff that will be very useful.

I suspect it maybe that a Relay has got stuck on. Most of the relays are attached to the UCH - drivers side fusebox. It's a bit of a palaver to remove it, but it should be possible to and be-able to reconnect it with it hanging down. If a relay is stuck on, you may be able to feel it being warmer than others or use an IR Thermometer (if you have one) to measure them all.

Yeh I reckon it might be something to do with the HRW actually, it seems that the fuse i have removed serves it. I just took the 10A fuse out of the UCH fusebox which supposedly serves the HRW/Steering lock relay too but that didnt do owt (apart from stop the steering lock from disconnecting!). I think you might be right SIC. That UCH looks a right arse to get to but I reckon that is the next thing to investigate, I need to find the HRW relay.

Don't go ripping stuff out just yet, I'll send you this info first. That way it'll be possible to be more methodical & precise in fixing this.

What year is it again?

That fuse is heated rear window and headlamp washers. HTH.

edit - bit slow there! Should have refreshed the page when I came back from checking.

Might be worth looking at the wiring to the tailgate...

HRW switch broken? You'd probably notice if it was the headlamp washers...

These back windows have a habit of exploding! This could be the reason if it's permanently on! Will be sure to advise my next customer with one. I've not done one for a while though!

You have a PM.

You've written a lovely bit of software to fix the voltage leak and have sent Mr B an apk? Top man!

GOONER NEWS

Not a lot to report TBH, the HRW fuse is still out so I am driving round with no HRW or headlight washers. I think thats an MOT fail so i will have to get it sorted eventually, but when the weather brightens up I think I am going to see if I can find a mobile auto electrician who will sort it while I stare glassy-eyed at my friggin spreadsheets in the office dreaming about fucking the whole lot off and driving to the south of Spain to live underneath a boulder in some Andalucian mountains.

Anyway one problem which did come up was the rear axle bushes started banging like a shithouse door in a force 9 AGAIN despite being only about 7 or 8 months old. Cheap shite from GSF, I say cheap but they were £20 each when genuine ones are only £30!!!! It is me who is the cheap item in this story. This time I spent £60 on a pair of genuine Renner items.

So last week I went up the garage to sort them again. I bought the required tool off eBay yonks ago so didnt expect any big issues.

Seein as it had all been to bits fairly recently it was a piece of cake. The genuine bushes have thicker outer metal sleeves and are less prone to going in cock-eyed and getting jammed so are much easier to fit too.

IMG_20170208_205918679.jpg

Look at that FFS, completely debonded, the rubber has not perished but the bond has completley let go. They must have had either some shitty watered-down bonding agent or some other process problem, whatever it is its very poor. The other side was about 50% debonded.

When I did the bushes last year, I knackered the first one when it went in on the cock and the outer metal got damaged. As I had bought a pair, I fitted the other one then bought a third to replace the one I had knacked. When I got up the garage with the third one, I realised that the bushes were handed and I had bought the wrong flippin side. I was not going to go all the way back to GSF then back up the garage again so I just shoved it in, ending up with 2 x RH bushes on the car. I did wonder if that was contributing to the car pulling to the RH side which it has always done since I've had it despite my best efforts to cure it. Anyway now it has a proper pair of bushes so I can discount that as a factor. I am annoyed to report that it STILL pulls very slightly to the right though. I reckon the last thing I can do is swap the tyres around, but the rear wheels are egg shaped so they need straightening before I can swap them (with their new firestones) onto the front.

Still, apart from the slight pull its driving very well, still doing 34mpg and no real problems to report apart from the earlier battery-flattening issue, I've now done 18,000 miles and I have to say its been a great car. I'm still a fan.

Yeah could do, I feel I ought to get it fixed though really, i dont mind chucking a few groat at it seeing as how generally well behaved the Gooner has been so far.

Famous last words....

ETA: I'd donate you a HBOL but Kiltox got it with the car.

Did you look at the stuff I PM'd you the other week/month?

I'm sure everyone's been wondering if the original Gooner has survived another mot in shiteist ownership.

Well, it has.

Incredibly, it only needed a couple of tyres for a first-time pass! (Although the engine light is now on for reasons not investigated, and the exhaust sounds like it's about to fall off.)

Well in!

Nice! This gives me comfort, ive don't squat to mine since having it!

Mine went in for a service yesterday. Absolutely nothing was wrong mechanically apparently. I fixed the headlight auto-adjustment sensor arm too, so the lights now go up and down properly and not blind people.

The Laguna love on here seems to have dropped off nowadays. I think its because it turns out that, unless you have a really early one, they aren't* that bad.

Saying that, my Grandads 52 plate example had an episode where the stop button wouldn't stop the engine. That fixed itself. Now the stop button stops the engine and, inexplicably, opens up the driver side rear window.
