Rover 75.....an appraisal

Since buying this

and discovering the auto box WAS well and truly banjaxed, I bought this

and rediscovered the pleasures of driving a car NOT designed for the bloody Nurbergring. Traditional British waftiness and comfort, like wot we used to be good at building. Not fast [2 litre KV6 Auto] doesn't grip , although I have a decent set of front tyres to go on, to replace the mismatched Korean ditchfiners, doesn't handle [poo for the same reason] just wafts along in total silence.

MPG ain't great, but everything works, and it's such a lovely place to be.

ye that about sums up the 75, it ain't very quick and its more a limousine than a sports car.

but...

but...

they are IMO lovely to look at, lovely to sit in and lovely to cruise about in.

these are i think brilliant cars. i've got a dizzler which is ok, the KV6's are lovely, turbine smooth engines if i think fragile (though not as fragile as the normal k-16's are) and thirsty, but hey, you cannot have everything!!

They are nice in different ways to other moderns - namely the ride doesn't loosen your fillings.

I would sooner have one of these than an X type jag.

also the 75 seems to be far more rot resistant than the jaguar.

how exactly ford managed to design and build a car in this day and age where the the sills, and more importantly the internal lattice girder/pressing thing inside the sills just disintegrate to nothing with rust.

shame, the x-type is nice, the rover though is nicer.

Mine is doing Stirling service ferrying everybody around at the minute. My modern is still in the dealer waiting for repair. Once my modern is back my 75 will be cleaned and the kids will once again be barred from it.

I concur with all of the above.  They're massive value and delightfully unfashionable, which is a bit odd as I reckon they're as faux-retro as a BMW Mini, yet 'the normals' love those.

Your not wrong. Was at mates bodyshop last night masking up the 75. The was a 2003 one in, no sills at all left. It was in for two new ones.

Shumarialto, can you get some pics? I've a £50 bet on with my father, who has a Y reg X-Type which gets washed once a year whether it needs it or not and which has all the work the garage says needs doing done. He reckons his sills will be virginal. I reckon theoretical.

In terms of 75s, they do handle if you're prepared to get a bit rough with them. Really well, in fact. But they don't like being driven hard - it's like having a well-mannered butler tap you on the shoulder and say "Excuse me sir, might we back off a touch?"

I was also surprised at what a good car the 75 is.

I picked up a V reg 2.5 V6 Connoisseur at auction for £200. It was never a car I particularly wanted but figured it was too cheap not to.

The ride, as you say, is astonishing. Lovely and soft yet solid in a way my French execs can't do. Quiet, composed and very civilised. The beefy V6 was quite a treat but a thirsty bastard... My Laguna V6 was averaging 32mpg while the Rover only broke 20.

The blue leather interior was superb, as was the electric rear sun blind. The leaky sunroof and climate control were not.

Surprised at how capable they are and I will have another. Enjoy yours!

I was at the body shop, sorry no pics as it was dark and hammering down. Got a quick look and the sills were gone all the way along. They had been patched at the back as some point as well.

Did it have getting headlamp washers, but no rear parking sensors? Was it light blue?

Is HGF on the 1.8 a certainty or not? Seen loads at £5-600 wondered if HGF was a definite at this money?

Indeed it was!

Original dealer demonstrator then! Quite sought after now.

Really? Reg was V150 NAB. I ebayed it after a few months but I think it's dead now. If only I'd have known at the time....

If it had front washers, but not rear parking sensors, was v reg, light blue with a sunroof & blue interior then 99% chance it was!
