scaryoldcortina Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Should be easy enough with the engine off tbh. Back to the levers - does the top lever on the box move left and right? Assuming it does, move it to the middle and then see if you can move the back lever. This should move left and right but spring back to a central position. This is neutral. If you can get the levers back to this position (some force may be required) and the links are all in place you **should** be able to select gears. If you still can't, move the top lever to go into some random (prob 4th) gear and limp home.
scaryoldcortina Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Can you wedge the clutch down with a stick or something to make it easier to move into a gear. Also, thinking about it that's the worst advice ever. I can see the headline now Derbyshire man run over by own car - internet forum blamed cobblers, bub2006, dave21478 and 8 others 11
Cheggers Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Would the fact that Bub lost 3rd gear recently also point to a linkage??
richardmorris Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 I think it points to him having run over a black cat whilst driving under a ladder and chucking mirrors out of the window. Dick Cheeseburger, bub2006, michael1703 and 8 others 11
catsinthewelder Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 I did mean with the engine off but knowing Bub I should probably have said so. Could have got him one of these Dick Cheeseburger, Timewaster, Lord Sterling and 6 others 9
scaryoldcortina Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Would the fact that Bub lost 3rd gear recently also point to a linkage?? That was pretty much my first thought. Seeing as all links seem to be in place though, I wonder if they are all slack enough to jam partway into a gear leading to the current situation (seems to be neutral, but stick won't move). I'm hoping brute force with the levers sorts it out for now, and new links fixes it long term. edit to add - a bent top link would do this too. It should be straight.
bub2006 Posted November 28, 2015 Author Posted November 28, 2015 I've thrown towel in and left the thing at roadside. I've tried moving things with engine off but no joy. Everything connected just something is amiss.
Junkman Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 What do you mean left it at the roadside?Where are you heading and by which means? I can't come right now, because Junkwomen on night out, thus can't leave daughter No 2 on her own.But later tonight or tomorrow morning not a problem. pilninggas 1
Cavcraft Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 It really is time for you to hang up your driving gloves for a while. You aren't getting any luck or even joy with motoring, it's just making things worse for you and not getting any better. Even if you have to move to be nearer work/relations/whatever, that's the only option left for you I reckon for the next few months. Have a break from cars, save a few quid and your sanity. trigger, fred, The Moog and 3 others 6
bub2006 Posted November 28, 2015 Author Posted November 28, 2015 I've left the car in a form of layby/grass verge at back of beyond near Matlock, limped myself to civilization and spent 15 quid getting 9 mile in a bloody cab! Got to sort some form of recovery home for tomorrow though. Thanks for offer kind sir. M'coli 1
plasticvandan Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Is there some sort of Bermuda triangle in the Derby/notts area? Seems every sat evening bub is on here with a crashed/dead car, surprised dvla haven't sent you a Christmas card.tho quite what an out of work single man is doing out on the road every Saturday evening I don't know,I could just about scrape enough together to fill my Honda Cub when I was out of work.

garethj Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Time to register on a local car-share site or tap up a few relatives to use in rotation. I'm not religious, but your luck with cars is a sign from God, stop ignoring it before the fire and brimstone starts, followed by a plague of locusts

bub2006 Posted November 28, 2015 Author Posted November 28, 2015 I'm going to get one that doesn't involve monumental hill starts, dark lanes, suicidal drivers and dry stone walls
M'coli Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 There was a 106 GTI behind me at York GLF club that had the same problem, the guy couldn't select a gear at all, there was plenty of grinding and shit going on. They eventually stuck it up on a jack - no axle stands or nowt protection - and sussed it as the mechanism. I gave them a length of wire to keep the rod joints where they needed to be. Can you get an assistant to help you tomorrow? They might be able to help you to rock the transmission back-and-forth to allow a stubborn gear to be selected to get it moving. Take a block or two of wood to allow you to get under the car, and something that will allow you to tie the gearchange rods onto the bits they're falling off of.
bub2006 Posted November 28, 2015 Author Posted November 28, 2015 I need to find someone who knows more than me then!
