Military Vehicle Shite (May contain Trucks)

Whilst nosing around at work where I probably shouldn't have been nosing around at work I found a very interesting book, Data Book of RAF Mechanical Transport Vehicles. I have scanned quite a few of the images and I am willing to share them with you if anybody is interested. Below is a little taster.....

For many years there was a dealer in Ashton ( Preston) who sold ex RAF and Army staff cars, quite a lot of BL and Vauxhall stuff, used to fascinate me that they all had map lights fitted to the passenger footwell.

Posted

I like the description of the Metro, Car Saloon, Grade C, should be followed by "Could do better" (like my school reports)

Posted

Those were the days until they started leasing staff cars. KIA are the car of choice at the moment.

Posted

The reason I've never bought a new car is that the brochures are not like these. All you need is CAR, DRIVE to WORK, 1.1 engine, 4 wheels. BL Metro. No need for colour, radio or any other unnecessary shit.

There's an ex-Air Ministry TK bowser with markings like that still in use at Southampton scrap terminal. I must get a shot of it before it gets added to the pile for shipment. Be a bit ironic if bits of came back as a KIA staff car....

Iove them

My pal has three ex-military Metros and also an ex-mil Chevette, 2dr estate. All are still black, totally poverty spec !

Thanks for the feedback,I remember the Chevette estates, there were a few as training aids at St Athan and my first posting at Scampton there were still two left but they were soon replaced by Escort Diesel Estates.

I wonder if that is a yellow stripe on the Tranny van - would make sense where the first scout group minibus came from - navy blue with yellow stripe just like that.

I was not expecting pictures of a Metro in this thread! I would absolutely be pouring over that book. Those TK Bedfords look so handsome in the photos there.

Just in case GCHQ, MI5 or MI6 have clocked this thread and believe that I am compromising National security, all vehicles featured are now obsolete. (Bar one)

Just in case ISIS or Al Qaeda have clocked this thread, no vehicles featured in this thread are currently in service (possibly bar one) you wankers.

I think its the illustrations, love those TKs. I was just thinking today as I passed 4 MAN military trucks on the motorway, that 5 years or so ago the Bedford/AWD MKs were common sights, but now they all appear to be gone.

Posted

Yeah, all the Bedfords have all gone now, and the Leyland DAF trucks too. The end of an era from when the Armed Forces only purchased British vehicles. Sad times.

there used to be a dealer on the eastside of bawtry on the A631 I think in the 70's early 80's allways had it rammed with ex mod (presume german) stuff all lhd mk4 shape taunus, mini, mk2 escort est & vans (with full side windows ) all low spec base/L& a few transits.

never seemed to move or ever be anyone there on our reg passing, think its still a used van lot not been past for a couple of years.

any pics/specs of these?

Talking to a co-worker a while back, she got her first car, an ex RAF Mini, in the 1970s. According to her the RAF used to dispose of their used cars in bulk at an auction house in Yorkshire for low prices, usually these were bought by dealers and sold on individually. So her and her friends their pooled together and her Dad went down to the auctions one day and came back the owner of 5 identical Minis in dark blue for far less than it'd have cost to actually buy 5 cars individually, each with a little fire extinguisher bolted in the passenger side footwell.

Does this sound legitimate? It's not too far fetched to think of the RAF using Minis as runabouts...

Great thread. The cars and vans fascinate me. When I worked at Withams they had virtually all the trucks pictured there bar TKs and the Cargo tractor units, which I believe were Cummins L10 powered with twin splitters - the cheese of Cargos.

Just brilliant.  I love the idea of filling in a stores requisition form and 4 weeks later a bloke in a brown store coat arrives, saying "where do you want these Sherpa vans?"
