1985 Volvo 360 GLE + 1987 340 GL

This was a unusual model 340 GL 1.7 saloon but a Special, I can remember all the changes but it had plush interior.

I got this in August 1986 but only had it for a month or before it was sold. I only noted the month and year I got my company cars but I had a new 340 1.7 August, September and October 1986.

My first one, a 360GLT which later died of rust:

A 5dr base 340 I got for free when a GF's landlord spotted me in the GLT. I broke this for spares:

And dangled a small block chevy into for a laugh:

A late, fully loaded (as far as these things go) variomatic which I crashed in the lake district in the early hours of new year's day, I didn't even have a bruise after this:

How it looked before I stuffed it:

A severely rotten 3dr I bought and immediately regretted. These things can rot with the best of them:

The ex-WWIILLSSOONN and overrun 343 was next on the chopping block (I'm looking like a right pikey here):

At this point I feel compelled to say that all the ones I broke donated every part they could to either other 300s, or my spares mountain.

There have been more, and I still have 4 of the things.

I have accumulated a fairly large spares mountain too, very useful, not really had to buy many parts for either car.

I just have them there already!

Today I had some bad luck.

The diff on my 360 was welded by the previous owner, I had planned to fit an open diff and won one on ebay the other day for 99p.

Today something happened to the welded diff that's on the car and it now clunks and when turning right the engine just seems to rev up.

It's also not welded anymore for whatever reason, there was quite a lot of play in the nearside output flange so it's perhaps that.

This is severely annoying, my only other working car is the 340 and it barely works.

To add to this, the 99p diff is in Edinburgh, I'm on the other side of the closed bridge...

Piss!!!

I was thinking of going over at 8pm anyway as it might be quieter, so both being available to use should mean it's quiet (I hope).

There used to be one parked in Coventry which was sold new by Pollendines of Frinton (RIP) which was a coincidence, me being Frintonian and all.

Anyway, its 360GLT badging had been rearranged to (sort of) read LEGO GT.

my maths teacher and his wife had matching late 360glt's in red. much want.

i know of a pair of grey 360glt's here. but i dont have the space.

A TD 340 would be great - as I say the only beef I have with at least the 1.7 and the 360 is the fuel economy.

I really can't get along with 440s, they just feel shonky and cheap to me, the 300 series is a bit more Volvo-like.

I've still got the 440 I took the 2 litre engine out of, no one wants to buy anything from it!

They do feel a bit iffy, but they're a laugh to drive with decent tyres. On scrapyard AINTICLEVER ditchfinders, my Turbo was dismal.

Volvo 360 with the 2.5TDi engine from an 850 would be lolsome.

What a great thread.

Nothing would be more lolsome than a 850 T5R motor somehow stuffed in there.

Can't think of a better way of turning tyres into smoke, poverty and regret.

I rewelded the diff to get me by and it worked for a little while but then broke again, this time leaving me with no drive.

Welding on top of shit welding was never going to be great.

Yesterday I borrowed FOAD's red 1.4 340 and drove to Edinburgh via a fairly annoying detour to collect a 340 box and diff.

This afternoon I removed the gearbox and diff from my 360 and put the 340 diff on my 360 box.
