VIC CAT C Scrapped now

Just be careful out there folks - VIC scrapped now:

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-identity-check

Previously cars registered CAT C, required a test before returning to the road - not anymore! So the new owner will be none the wiser.... and CAT C condition does also seem to vary in severity wildly.

No problems buying CAT C - far from it - just likely lots of damage repairable salvage will be hitting the classifieds this week, so if it has a flat battery, green rubber trim or smells musty pay £££ accordingly so chaps.

It wasn't a test, it was just an identity check to make sure it wasn't a ringer.

Yup. No safety check type stuff at all. As long as various numbers matched that was that.

I've taken a few cars for VICs and never repaired one beforehand other than making them legal to drive there -fixing bulbs etc.

When abolishing Cat Cs was first mooted, that was it.  No more cat Cs.  The original discussion paper lent everyone to believe that while the, "write-off" decision was being left in the hands of the private sector, the insurance companies, to simplify procedures there would be two write-offs, one could be potentially repaired and the other was scrap.

Now with lobbying of politicians by the insurance sector and the scrap organisations we have this mess.

Bear in mind that insurance companies are far from organised or regulated in how they categorise write-offs and with the overwhelming presence of the Directline model, your car will be lucky to see a professional assessor and the decision will be taken administratively in a nice office by a trained office hack on the evidence of a couple of digital pics of the damage.  The insurance companies have really developed the income stream from unwanted write offs and this wont stop.

Pity that they didn't stick to their guns and force the industry to be more scrupulous in their decisions, a car should be fixable or not.  Now we will have the continuation of the current scheme, just the laughable ID check is being phased out (organised crime didn't present ringers that would be caught!) and people will continue to wonder why the Focus with the headlight smashed is a Cat B but another similar model with the bags deployed and the front bumper at the bulkhead is a Cat C.

All this is further muddied by a certain American scrap outfit that hoovered up a lot of traditional breakers and is now publicly advertising how to get round the licenced breaker only cars.  They buy it, you pick everything off it and repair your similar model (sure!) and then they destroy what is left of a B and do the paperwork.

As above I've been hanging on to apply for a log book until I was sure it was abolished.

I'd vaguely heard about this coming. Suits me, makes my life easier for getting the Camry Estate (and perhaps even the Saloon) back on the road.

A quick DVLA check on both of them confirms no checks required.
