Renault engine - if it uses the same gearbox as the Lagunas I would run away, as these seem prone to failure from a straw poll of friends who have had 98-99 Laguna 1 facelift 1.9DTis.

They seem to suffer from odd electrical maladies, very much like the 440 before it. Not sure whether thats anything to do with the Dutch factory they came from or whether Volvos quality control has slipped since the Mitsubishi floor pan sharing exercise started. One noticable factor regarding 90% of the V40 are the fact at least one rear lamp seems to be non functioning. Not bad looking cars, Japanese pcd, loads of kit and quite good value but not a real Volvo. Compare a V40 to a late 240, and I know exactly where my money would be spent.

I like them, they've got enough Volvo in them to remain quite distinctive.

Amazingly I have never had a V40 but they look and drive well, if it's cheap enough why the devil not!

I asked the same question on here about 6 months ago, and bought a 99 V40 T4.Nice comfy, seems pretty well put together.Mine drinks a bit if I don't behave.I will concur with the bit about electrics, I've got no power to the tailgate lights - 2nd tail lights, reverse lights, fogs and number-plate lights. It's probably only a broken wire, but it's a pain in the arse all the same. I took it to a local specialist who gave it an interim service, he offered to "take a look" at £50ph, I declined politely.

I think they look jazzy. Other than that, no constructive advice to offer.

They're quite sturdy if you happen to hit the central reservation in one, as you would expect for an Ovlov....
