Hillman Hunter GLS racing

Found this, some really good driving in it.

If there's a thread for this kind of thing, I'm apologetic, however, I did look, and my findings were inconclusive.

Amazing to see it overtake everything else with such ease, a Mk1 Escort these days is ten grand so a Hunter must be about 20, is that right?

Bloody brilliant stuff, thanks for sharing!   That dude rocking up with family on board in the racer, Les Leston the Legend in that Z28 as well.   It was said at the time that the reason those Moskies did so well was that the brakes were shit so you might as well keep the other foot down!    Watching this makes me realise why I don't bother going to motor races much these days.

Brilliant!  Exactly how racing should be.  Look how the Hunter just slid past them and tell me again how Escorts are worth so much these days?

I think the trick for the Hunter was that a pretty basic (cheap enough for the class) car could be bought with double twin choke carbs. I have never really got the fanatical Ford Escort following but I guess Ford just put more into motorsport for longer than anyone else, and it has paid off.

I see that, but having owned examples of both, I think it says a lot that the Rootes outnumber the Escorts in my past.

Of course it could mean that when I was buying cars for two-figure sums, it was easier to find a Hunter than an Escort on offer.  But still I prefer the Hunter.

I think the interesting bit is they weren't that different to the road going versions, these days a touring car has absolutely nothing in common with the road going version.

This is actually interesting to watch, you can see the drivers really fighting with the cars, modern touring car racing is rubbish, it's just so boring.

I was fascinated by the way the Hunter was going past what looked like RS Escorts as if they were standing stil.

A little investigation shows that they were Sports, hence the big front wings ,therefore only 1300's .

The list price classification must have been made for the Moskvitches, presumably nothing else above about 850cc was available for the money .

I wonder if Chrysler manipulated the GLS' price to be the most powerful car available for under £1100 ?

It's interesting that Chrysler only ran the GLS for 73, using the Avenger 1500 GT in 72 &74. In fact Bernard Unett won the proper BTCC in 74 in an Avenger.
