Dicing with death

On the one hand, it's Darwin effect in full flow. Must be horrendous if you're a train driver though. Idiots.Given that we have the technology to fine people for speeding, why can't they take action against these people?! Pedestrians are a bit tricky but if you've got CCTV there anyway, throw the book at the fools!

Notice that two of the close calls involving cars were at crossing without gates. Yes it'd cost money but ALL crossings should have gates. Proper gates too not just a barrier. If people on foot want to hop over the barrier and get themselves killed that's their choice but at least having gates might stop an innattentive driver from straying onto the tracks. The line at which you stop for the red light should be much further away from the crossing too and there should be cameras like on traffic lights. It's the same deal as having barriers on bridges so that cars cannot leave the road and end up on the track like at Selby. It's simple common sense that they should be there but costs money. Spending money to save lives and prevent accidents is sadly not as important as spending it to raise more revenue though.

I once had a job that dealt with the less gruesome end of such things, there is one tube driver who has had the misfortune of 'killing' so many that his work colleagues call him the Red Baron.Sometimes there is nothing like black humour for coping with the really horrible things! Anyhow, nothing like a near death experience for making you feel alive. Like the time my brakes failed...........( no where near a level crossing)

All true but where do you draw the line, there will always be those freak accidents where you just cant reasonably expect anyone will ever end up on the line, short of putting up 5metre high concrete walls everywhere you will never guarantee segregation between trains and road traffic - and then some fugger will go and land a plane on the overhead wires.Plus those nutjobs who commit suicide by parking on the mainline and end up killing/maiming the occupants of the resulting derailed train.

i know that crossing with the corsa on very well, it is on the heart of wales line just past llandeilo, this line has many open crossings and all the crossings have had bumps on them some very serious and are well known for accidents -still these people chance their arm.

People do seem to be so impatient these days. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed more and more people taking to the hard shoulder if there's a jam on the motorway? Public mincing is too good for those sorts.

Do you think they could retro fit Heat seeking missile launchers to the front of trains? Or machine guns? It would cheer up a boring run for the train driver..............

twats. This should definitely be an endorseable offence. They have cameras to catch people jumping red lights so im sure the same technology could be used at level crossings to stop these muppets.Thing is , they wouldnt make much money out of it even though it would save lives, whereas they can make plenty fining perfectly safe drivers doing 80 on the motorway, so unsurprisingly thats what they do.

Yup, I walked into that one! Though perhaps that'd actually be a better punishment than the huge mincing machine that I was thinking of (anyone remember Kenny Everrett's show?!)

Utter stupidity. Why take that level of risk really? And yes, surely there is a way they can be traced and fined which might act as a bit of a disincentive to the morons that do it.

Our crossings at Marlow have a hard drive recorder, and we download and prosecute/BTP lose paperwork.... Caught an ASDA van jumping the crossing last week! Most of the 165 Turbo's in the Western aera are CCTV'd so your filmed twice
