Shite of the Week 1 - Kia Sportage

As we know, on the angry forum they have Shed of the Week, in which they have a whole £1000 to spend on a piece of automotive excellence.

As shiteists, spending £1000 seemed to be way OTT but can you find something that nobody on autoshite currently promotes as a great piece of cheap usable tat for £300?

So my aim is simple, each Thursday I will scour the ads and find a £300 car with MOT that shiteists will approve of but is not regularly seen on our pages.

This week I found a golden piece of shite in the first 30 seconds on Gumtree, the Kia Sportage

It was a p.x. for a camper (that is probably shite as well)

The Sportage I remember for the advert that had a bunch of cartoon barbarians chasing a family in the cartoon Sportage, but it could drive up the hill which the family in the MPV couldn't so they got eaten instead.

As a sales message it was sort of, why buy a boring car for £14,000 when you can have a 4x4.

I thought at the time that having a Ford Focus would have been preferable as I had a couple as works hire cars and they were good, the Kia seemed a bit shit compared to 'proper' European cars.

I know better now.

I have never been in one or cared about them before, but a 4x4 for £300 could be a winter shite bargain.

This is Kia trying to move out of their pattern parts cars origin and into designing their own stuff, early attempts mean odd results but there is nothing too bad about the looks if you like inoffensive curves.

The interior is nasty, but in the good sort of way that will last forever.

So what has time done for the old girl?

The rust shows.

The interior is blander than a bread sandwich.

And the switch gear behind the steering wheel is delightfully nuts.

According to this vid they do work as soft roaders

The ad is at https://www.gumtree.com/p/kia/2002-kia-sportage-2.0-sx-107k-mot-until-dec-2015/1132932189

and reads

Just taken in px against campervan is this kia sportage
NO MESSING AROUND, IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY COME VIEW/TAKE IT AWAY.
NO OFFERS.

It has 4x electric windows, air-con, central locking, alloy wheels, good tyres, tinted windows
5 speed manual
MOT until 18th Dec 2015
No Tax (new law/rules)
107,000 miles

There are bits of rust in a couple of places, cheap workhorse, 4x4 works
Collection from Seaton Delaval, Whitley Bay within office hours.

So give us a thumbs up or a thumbs down on the Sportage and I will add up the results for a general shiteist approval thingy.

That's definitely worth a thumb up.  It's something I'd consider, could be a handy little runabout.

A chap I worked with bought one new. He was doing a 60 mile round trip per day.

Turns out the economy of one of these things, the one thing that would make it better than a V8 Disco, is no better than a V8 disco.

Hence it has no point, so THUMBS UP

Some years back, when renting a car in DC, I was offered a choice between one of these and a Nissan Sentra.  I chose the Renault Megane in the Mexican kimono...

S-daughter had one for ages, did absolutely no work/servicing, in about 40,000 miles.

Unbreakable.

Thumbs Up.

I thought you were talking about the current model, favourite of neu-middle class mums (outwardly affluent but with the values of a chav), gladly you reminded me of a car I haven't seen for ages. There's something about large Eastern cars of this era, Kias, Hyundais and such like that I can't put my finger on, like a faintly exotic character that hasn't yet been desensitised by the lowing herds of scummy mummies and boorish dads.

I'd give one a try were it not for the fact I'd want to try to complete the set.

Thumbs up from me.

Owned one that I took in part ex for a mk1 Punto. Not a bad car and I had buyers fighting over it. They're a bit thirsty but good fun.

I must admit although these have entirely passed me by you can't really go wrong for the money.

The rear mount spare always looked like someone cobbled it up from a B&Q towel rail.

Like. Interior shares many quality* genuine plastic items from my Shuma. Fancy one at some point but the tax on the later ones is a bit hefty.

Just noticed it has a low box to, proper bit of kit.
