Custombilt in Benwell. Pops WW nearly bought me a mk3 escort Ghia from there in the 90s. For my 18th birthday I think.

I didn't get a license till I was 36.

Its still there, I drove past it yesterday

I would have thought there would have been more interest in a Ford. It was only £300 too.

Why isn't that an Olympian?

No idea, did anyone other then London Transport buy them new? TWPTE seemed to have chosen the MCW Metrobus over the Titan.

Nice spread of British and imports of the day.

I couldn't get the German between the cortinas.

That Sunderland footage van must be 1990 at the latest?

The Titan was an integral to follow on from the National.  The Olympian was a chassis based bus, more conventional, and came out a few years later.  Apart from a few odd sales, London bought nearly all the Titans though I think Reading bought a few new ones.  WMPTE and I think Manchester had tiny numbers.  Stagecoach seemed to do well with them and many lasted for ages with them.

Some great pictures thanks.

Just for fun. The aftermath of the first attempt at full public transport integration when a Metro train and a bus met unsuccessfully at Kingston Park level crossing in the early eighties.

Urvan outside the Adelphi Hotel! DVLA says it was last taxed in 1990 and was black – not a standard colour, maybe a ‘private ambulance’?

Look at all the Cortina Mk3 and Hunter taxis. Imagine how knackered they’d have been after a few years use on the rank….

Is that a Ford Taunus with the BAOR plates, sneaking in on the left?

And check how close the Capri's index is to Jack Carter's Jag-killing Cortina...

Looking at these it's not difficult to see why O/S/F Tax exists, nalmost every picture from the 50's to 90's is full of Fords.

Just the sight of a Cortina or Transit can stir nostalgic memories in even the most cynical of Citroenists or Jap lickers .its fun spotting the odd Fiat 132 or Datsun Cherry ,but the wall to wall Dagenham( or Halewood or Cologne etc) Dustbins , just shout This is Working Class Britain.

The Rootes Arrow minicabs come as no surprise ,Terry drove one in the 'Whatever happened to The Likely Lads'

Christmas special.

Yes, 12m, front wheel drive with an in line German V4 which, perhaps surprisingly, was not the same as the V4 used by UK fords.

You see that 300-series Volvo parked outside of the Adelphi?  I got a parking ticket in that very spot once in my dad's 416 as it was re-designated as a loading bay.  PHACT!
