Retro Museum of Socialism - Bulgaria

I wonder there were similar urban legends in Bulgaria about black Volgas driving around at nights abducting people for their organs, blood etc.

It looks a stunning place and I want to live in it; also is it just me, or does that one Moskvich look like they stole the drawings for a Hillman Minx and Ford 100E, ripped them in half and stuck the front of the Minx to the back of a 100E?

Richard, it's not that big.

4,000 sqm of the top floor of the Grand Mall, as shown at the top right of the floor plan below.

Wow I wasn't expecting a second round of pics! I'm blown away by that collection. How do they get the cars in such pristine condition? Is there a restoration workshop attached, or have cars been in the collection from new? Simply amazing!

Yup...i watched the sad demise of the DDR..buying coal and cheap vodka from departing Russians in Berlin...history reduced to the scrapheap and fleamarkets...im enthralled by this place..epic post Buckets..back in New Zealand...i have a 1986 TASS press photo pack ..a whole pile of official USSR photos of the Goodwill Games...total propaganda..serene and pure Soviet life...apart from all the sport-gymnasts and Red Guard...theres two portraits of Gorbachev and one of the Missus...

What a staggering place. The mixture of waxworks and too-bloody-shiny cars is just incredible.

The cars are too-bloody-shiny though.

I'm with you on the Aleko...I think that was what Moskvich were making when they went kaput. I seem to remember seeing photos of half finished cars left rusting outside after the factory ran out of money/parts.

Love the picture of the benevolent, pipe smoking Uncle Joe... makes him appear like a cuddly old uncle, albeit one with a mass murdering side to him, but hey, he's not all bad*

Awesome pics, interesting that they made cigarettes for the Western market (presume that's why the English language packs).

Most of the waxworks of the various Communist leaders look more expressive and cheerful than they actually were in real life, and Nikita looks well steamed up about something, maybe the comrades forgot the engine in his new Zaz.

Ref: the Stalin/Lenin double act. "To me Comrade.. No, to you Comrade...."
Lemon Yellow Moskvich Wagon for me please, in the absence of a Scaldia Volga M21 Wagon. Phew. Haven't seen Dacias that clean, even when I worked at a main dealer in the late 80s.

Wow, that is some collection! I missed this last week so I'm glad it's popped back to the top.

Good to see the place is packed out with plenty of punters to keep it running, too. All too often these places are empty and don't last long. Oh, wait.
