Speed Bumps !!

The new style ones they've started putting in around here are rubber, made of 9 sections that bolt to the road. One square centre one surrounded by slopes.

Except, most cars larger than a Fiesta just straddle them and don't need to slow down. Brilliant!

They are a nightmare in the Reliant  :?

In Germany they have a much better system basically they hook up the 'you're going over 30' flashing signs to a pedestrian crossing. So if you are driving down the road at 30 or less no problem, if you speed then the crossing in front of you changes to red and you have to stop. No damage to your car and no point in tail gating.

On the road next to my house there used to be a chicane then the council replaced it with a single bump, the bump isn't too bad but it is now used a start line by the local 1.2 corsa bean tin exhaust yoofs who proceed to rev the tits off their car after the speed bump down the road towards the roundabout at all hours of the day. This regularly wakes me up when I have the windows open when it's hot.

The road into our estate was recently resurfaced, the finish was smooth as a race track. Two days later, it was dug up for speed bumps to be installed. Two days after that, the speed bumps were dug up and rebuilt as the original ones were too high - nice work there, edinburgh council !

I don't mind having them in our road, there was a guy who lived further along who always drove like a dick down the street, pretty selfish when there's kids playing on their bikes and scooters etc. I do have to slow to walking pace to get over them in the mazda but that's my own fault for having low and stiff suspension.

This has to be the best solution, I believe several countries use it.

I'm amazed that the Greens support speed bumps, in Brighton there are loads of the things (and 20MPH limits) and all the crawling along in low gear, stopping and starting etc increases the air and sound pollution amazingly.

Ah yes, the Princess has the same wonderful approach to speedbumps as the DS.  Better yet, the track is wide enough on the Princess for the island type bumps to pass under the car without touching the tyres.  Even better is watching the taxi tailgating the Princess suddenly hit the speed bump you showed no signs of passing over at the signposted speed limit.  Xantia isn't so refined about it and just a little narrow on the track for some island bumps but can still handle most with considerable aplomb.

At Ladybower reservoir there's a speedbump in a car park right on a corner where a downhill slope becomes a flat.  I had three people in the car and it was lowered but not so much I had issues normally.  Crept over this stupid speed-bump-bar and it pull my (completely standard, skinny, tucked up against the car neatly) exhaust off.  Was not happy.

I got an extremely long-winded and tedious legal-ese letter from the mayor a couple of days ago which boils down to them wanting to put a speedbump  outside my house.

They can FUCK RIGHT OFF OUT OF TOWN with that - no fucking way, and if they put it in anyway I will be out there the first night unbolting it or taking a pick-axe to it, depending on what kind they use.

I hate the folk who speed through the village - Pretty much everyone breaks the 50kph limit and some twats must be doing 100+ but the noise of people braking, bumping over then accelerating away from a speed bump, plus the exhaust pollution since everyone has dizzle here will be unbearable.

Have you heard an empty tipper truck clattering over one? Would you want that noise outside your house? no, didnt think so, and neither do I thats for fucking sure.

Yep that's what pisses me off the squeal of the brakes followed by the foot going down, I get a lot of tesco lorries banging over it as well 24 hours a day, ka-bang ka bang for the tractor unit and then ka-bang ka-bang for the trailer.

Best car I've ever had for speed bumps was my old E28 528i. That thing just flew over 'em.

IIRC there is/was a chip shop in one of the less salubrious areas of Burnley called 'Joes Chippy' back in the 1980's.

At the end of a street, facing one with a massive speed bump. Occasionally cars actually got airborne over the thing and smashed into the chip shop! I seem to remember the shop with 'Joes Chippy II', and later as 'Joes Chippy III' signs over the door!

Stag goes over speedbumps no problem at all, but then it started mysteriously eating its way through bottom link ball joints on the front suspension. so I go slow now and accelerate hard back up to 30mph after each one. Nice stainless exhaust lets everyone know.

Range Rover has no issues at all with them at 30mph, Infact the faster the smoother :) industrial estate where I used to work I found that I could hit em at 50 and barely feel them. Tailgating chap in an RX8 certainly felt one though </wicked> Larf? I nearly shat myself

Like most other folk here say, pointless and dont slow the prats down who speed like chavs and delivery drivers.

I never tailgate other folk who need to go over speed bumps at 5mph, not their fault after all.

Do like the Germanian traffic light Idea though.

Over here in Sunny Cal. some fucking genius came up with the idea of putting the speed bumps in at a 70 degree angle to the kerb. This has the effect of lifting the four corners of the vehicle one after the other and rocking the thing violently from side to side. Also some drivers making a weird all over the road approach to tackle the bump square on....hmmmm. Not good for ambulances, if you wasnt dead when they put you in it then you sure fuckin will be bytime it reaches the main road.
