Large Pez estate with cruise

My Subaru Outback has just rusted through its second rear subframe and I can't face any more welding.

Therefore I'm in need of a replacement large petrol estate so thought I might invite the cavalcade of shite you are all trying to offload or have spotted. I'm really not fussy but there are a few essentials:

Petrol

Cruise control

Large flat boot with seats down

Capable of motorway speeds for several hours

Not really bothered about anything else like manual/auto, mpg etc. Don't mind a bit of fettling so long as it's not stuff that needs a lift or a welder.

I'm based in South Devon so more interested in the southern half of England if possible. Budget is fairly flexible too.

Volvo V70s are plentiful, don't rust badly and are commonly available with petrol engines and cruise control.

Now I have the Alfa 156 Sportswagon I could part with my 2001 Volvo V70 XC AWD 2.3 Ltr 5 Cyl petrol turbo 200bhp, 5 speed Auto, 174k miles well sorted car that I drove to Scotland and back a month ago. Has cruise, working air con, remote locking etc. It has nearly run out of MOT so I will add 12 months MOT. Apart from the odd scratch and ding the only fault I know of is an oil leak so it uses 1 Ltr of oil about every 700 miles and has oil around the top of the engine. The oil filer neck looks like it has been repaired but I don’t really know where it comes out. Normally 23-24 mpg but to Scotland it was over 26 mpg. If I advertised it (probably won't) I would price it at £1795 but shiters price £1400.

This.

I had a 2001 V70 2.4 back in 2012. I used it to batter up and down the country with work and it was ace.

Boot is huge and it was quite frugal as well.

If you are considering a V70 Ovlov, you are wise to want petrol, the several people I've known with diesel (D5?) versions have all have big troubles with the engines.

The old VAG-sourced TDI is good, but some are getting tired now. I thought the D5 was supposed to be good, my friend bought a high mileage V70 D5 ages ago and it's still going strong, and my taxi driver neighbour hasn't had any issues with his S60 D5.

All I can do is relay the experiences of friends who've owned them, I admit they were an OK drive (I'm not really into diesels) but I've never owned one. They seemed to have alot of bother with injectors, pumps, i/coolers, turbos and being poor starters, not really on for a car from what I'd regard as a good solid manufacturer.

The TDIs do seem to hold their value well - late TDIs seem to fetch more than early D5s.  I was on the lookout for a cheap one before I bought the Mondeo, but there just weren't any.

T5s can be picked up cheap these days, and they're not as bad on fuel as you might expect - mine seems to do about 35mpg on a run.

^^^T5 - now that's a car! Drove one when they were pretty new - the first Volvo I ever thought 'I'd like one of these!!'

Like a lot of performance cars, I'd have thought most would be well hammered & pretty shagged out by now, if not then they'll be on the pricey side but at least you'd have something that (kept properly) wouldn't depreciate.

All good suggestions.

I had gone off Volovs because of the weird squishy seats that once knackered are like a bed of nails. This talk of one is re-piqueing interest. Perhaps one not driven by far bastards might be alright?

Thought Saabs always looked small in the back?

Re the Aerodeck, think only the biggest engine came with cruise but that's maybe nonsense. Would be happy with one but they seem very rare. I have both a dodgy knee and ankle which mean I can't really drive motorways without it.

I was also thinking Citroen C5, Mondeo or even Vectra if the 3.2 turns up nearby. Expect those are all horrible in reality.

Anyone

Merc is the obvious one if you want an auto, manual less so ... I believe Lord_Sterling of this parish may have a slightly* used Merc estate for sale ;)

Vectra 3.2s are a brilliant motorway cruiser.  Massive boot with the seats down too.  Better ride than a Mondeo, although probably not as good as a C5 (I've never had one of those).

I just looked at a Volvo V70, petrol 2.4 manual with 185,000 miles. Price was very salty but it's only round the corner.  Seemed in good nick, seats were nowhere near as bad as I remember them, bodywork was perfect.  One thing spoiled it, there was a loud whining noise from the front drivers side of the engine. Sounded like alternator belt maybe? Seemed to be related to revs, i.e got louder with more. The seller let me drive it alone so I took a quick video - bonkers I know.

Seemed like a lovely car to cruise motorways in. Might make an offer if anyone can diagnose it as non terminal.

Hard to tell from the video, but it doesn't sound terminal - maybe a dry bearing in one of the ancillaries?

How salty are we talking though?  The 2.4 pez, especially in 140bhp form, is normally the cheapest of the V70s.

Wanted £1250, on reflection probably not ridiculous. 2004 model. The noise was really loud, sounded awful. Wouldn't want it to put me off if it's an easy fix.

Evening all,

I had a similar noise on my Omega many years ago and turned out to be an idler pulley on the cam belt.

If I was looking for an estate, I would recommend a V6 Omega.

had two for over 10 years-fantastic cars!

£1250 does sound rather a lot with that mileage.

As a comparison, I got my (older but lower mileage) T5 auto for just over a monkey, although it needs a few quid spending on it (knocking osf suspension, dented rear door and the battery is jiggered).  Lovely car though - seats are superb, and it's probably the best motorway cruiser I've ever owned (fuel consumption notwithstanding).

Definitely overpriced I paid £1100 for a 51 plate V70 2.4, full service history with 111k on the clock. That was 3 years ago this month, so would be the same age as this 04 plate is now. He needs beating down a bit on price.

how about a rover 75, if you can find one that isn't kippered and if you don't mind some fettling?

they come with a large pez engine, 2.5 kv6 or a really big pes engine, the 4.5 mustang engine?

the v8 will be big bucks though, assuming you can find one.

That's mega £ for a V70 pez. Brilliant cars though, I love mine. Body on the P2 is galvanised so no rust issues.

Pre face-lift can have weird electrical problems, instrument panels failing and needing specialist attention, all down to early use of lead free solder.

PCV systems get clogged up - I've just replaced mine, pig of a job. Causes over pressurisation of crank case, seals start blowing out and oil goes everywhere. Look for faint oil smell in cabin, white smoke from exhaust.

Handbrake shoes can delaminate and cause havoc locking rear axle if you are very unlucky

I've found mine very fussy when it comes to front tyres.

Most comfortable car I've ever owned and the stereo is great

At risk of incurring ire of modern haters I took advice from on here and have purchased a late P2 V70. The slowest with the old 2.4 auto non turbo pez engine of course. Interior is pure base spec but very good nick. I can easily lie flat so should be able to kip in the back with surfboards so it was an easy choice.

In a shock development the car is to be driven south this Thursday, about as far from it's natural home as possible.

I shan't post pics since it's not really interesting but I just wanted to say thanks for advice.
