Shiter near Barnet London needed -update:The TACR1 has started

I'm looking for a big favour from anyone near Barnet who would be able to move a Land Rover from someone's drive before it goes to the scrappy. Or even salvage some bits off it. Dosheroonies for time, fuel etc will be supplied.

What is it and what do you want? Might be able to swing by.

It's a old tacr 1 and has some useful bits on it that would help me with mine like the wheels and hopefully the original gearbox / pto. The seller has had it on sale for a while but I only spotted it today. Coincidentally his mum was going to scrap it today and I'm waiting to hear if it's been given a stay of execution. I could possibly bomb down tomorrow with the trailer and drop it off at the nearest scrappy after I've salvaged as much as possible.

That would be late in the day though and I'd hate for it to be scrapped for the sake of a day or two.

I'd offer to help but lifting wheels and gearboxes are a no no for my fecked back. I might be able to help you get it on the trailer tomorrow if you need a hand.

Fair enough dude, give us a shout if it's about - couple of bits I could make use of. Stick it on a trailer, that's worth saving whole.

I live in Barnet. You have PM.

It's walking distance from my gaff! I'll take a swing by after work and see how easy extraction might (or might not..) be!

Thanks Skoze, Ken and Andrew. Communications with seller are ongoing...

If an Autoshite award existed for acts of selfless kindness, that gong would be winging its way to Andrew353w, top shiter of Barnet.

Thank you Andrew. Top bloke.

The back story -

The armed forces commissioned an airfield crash rescue Land Rover. It was called a TACR1 and 89 were made, the first 22 of which were based on the series IIA. I have had one for a couple of years. It's a wreck.

Last week I was googling images of tacr1s, as one does, and spotted a pic on about page 4 that piqued my interest. A couple of clicks took me to a gumtree ad. A 19 day old advert of a tacr1 that had been languishing in a front garden of Barnet for years.

Emails were exchanged and it turns out the tacr1 was in the verge of being bridged. The seller had been messed about several times and they were needing rid. I had to act quickly.

Not for the first time, a rash decision was made and a price was agreed. The only problem was it was 472 miles away...

It had to be moved by Tuesday, I did the math and the only sensible option was a transport company. The seller is a very nice lady called Alison who, in her own words, is small and short.

A cry for help on autoshite brought much appreciated responses from Skoze, Ken and Andrew. Turns out Andrew lives round the corner from the seller and is prepared to help the petite Alison load up the loose items.

It pished with rain. Andrew got very wet and dirty as nature had started to consume said loose items and indeed, the Land Rover itself.

Not only did Andrew give up his Sunday for this stranger from a distant land, but he returned today to help with the loading. Andrew may wish to fill us in with some of the trials and tribulations that followed. Suffice to say, it wasn't a five minute job and it wasn't easy.

Andrew, I owe you one. In fact I owe you several.

The tacr1 won't arrive at its new home until later in the week so further updates will follow...

Good shite co-ordination by all concerned! That 1955 Ford Sedan Delivery, though! Just in from California I think. There is certainly some good stuff going on here.

Did petite alison say "ooh you Land Rover wrestling hunk, you're all wet, come inside and dry off" etc?

You should have PM'd me, I would have gone to supervise :)

Have you got Alisons number as she might be able to help with some Daf's by the look of it.

Those dafs were heartily crushed in the effort to load the bits of Land Rover! Alison's help making the coffee was MOST appreciated!

Heroic - mad - brilliant - rusty - crap photos - rain and filth - nobody else would understand.

I love this place sometimes, like now.

Picture of the diminutive Welsh Alison, who offered moral support, coffee and wine!

The recovery vehicle's handbrake couldn't hold it when the winch was used to pull the Land Rover out of its 17 year restring place! In the end I sat in the recovery truck's cab, with my foot on the footbrake while the operator S-L-O-W-L-Y winched the Land Rover onto the trailer of the truck. As the Land Rover was pulled out of its resting place we had to ensure it was pulled UP hill, or it would have rolled away down a steep hill. This was a difficult manoeuvre but in the end it was a successful Autoshite mission!

I've tried to put these pictures the right way up by reversing them in my photos file, but they STILL come out upside down! Sorry about that!

The v5 arrived. Still waiting on the LR.

It's chassis number is 19H which means it is this one posted to RAF Manston.

It got a bit to close to the action in its day.

And the same Land Rover was used in a poster that was plastered all over the London underground apparently.

Hurrah! The old beast has made it the 472 miles north and is about to nestle beside one of its few surviving brethren.

I'll head back to it this evening and see if the engine turns over. First impressions are that the chassis looks saveable.

If you push it back against the wall of the building behind the Land Rover it could sit there for ANOTHER 17 years....

There's something about a 109 with the screen down and 900 tyres  8)  8)

Tam came along in his raffle rover to help shove the LR into its new resting place.post-5582-0-08443800-1438723658_thumb.jpg

Didn't have time to mess about trying to start it. Maybe tomorrow.

Only 22 made, these two are numbers 14 and 21 and no doubt shared some garage space 45 years ago.

They have my maestro and two of Tam's P6s for company.

They take up less room when stored on their side.

I'll stick my neck out and say that I reckon that's the most scenic car storage space on Autoshite but I'll gladly be proven wrong by other efforts. This LR love really isn't helping my current obsession with wanting a S1, especially since I dream of at least trying one with the 'screen down and the doors off at least once.

As a driver for a volunteer brigade though, as much as I appreciate a fire tender, that one really was sited too near to the fire, so poor judgement skills there. But then what more would you expect from the RAF?!

(Army child).

That P6 is lovely I've never seen one that old before just goes to show Rover must of known about a merger nearly 30 years before hand with that Austin/Rover group initialed number plate.

There's no key and the wiring is a bit shambolic. Bypassing all that gubbins, I got it turning over but no spark was achieved. I think the coil is dead so I'll take a good one out to it tomorrow.

I don't know what engine this is as it looks different to all my other 2 and a quarter petrols. Maybe a 2.5 or is the 5 main bearing job look like this?

This double choke weber (?) is confusing me. Why does it need a live feed of leccy?

Engine number tells me it's a five main bearing engine off a late series 3 or early 90 / 110.

I stole the coil off the maestro and got sparks at the plugs. There's no fuel tank and these lift pumps don't do much when there's air in the system and only battery power turning the engine so I rigged up a gravity fuel feed.

It started easily and was soon drawing fuel up from the tank (another bottle).

It idled nicely and seemed to run very smoothly which is pleasing for an engine that's sat outside dormant for 17 years.

I had filled the radiator the other day and it seems to have kept all its water. The oil didn't look too bad considering.

What steps are recommended when recommissioning and old petrol engine?

Posted

Electric thing on the carburettor is the fuel cut-off solenoid, just there to prevent running-on.
