Tips for avoiding broken studs?

Due to crack off the exhaust manifold on the Focus, as per on a ford, when you undo the nuts it brings the stud out with it. Has anyone any top tips though on avoiding a sheared stud given the Focus' predilection for having rusty fasteners?

So far I've soaked threads in Plusgas twice, given them a real soak. Took various manifolds off before however they had a good deal better access than what I'm tackling now so it going tits up is going to be a pain that's why I ask.

If possible get the car good and hot . Them give each stud a nice square crack on the end with a hammer . Good fitting hex socket on a sliding t bar so you can work it back and forward . If you just wind a stud right out in one go it can take the treads out of the head with it

I usually tighten them a little first to get them moving, after soaking in wd40/plus gas of course.

Also wiggle them out back and forward as above.

Still, it doesn't always work.

I've got 6 sided sockets plus I've sprayed the studs with Plusgas then got the engine hot, hopefully the fluid will have got into the threads.

I always do the out and in thing. If the stud is heavily rusted, especially around the part where it meets the head, it'll break off anyway.

Heat - then tighten them a touch. Should come out then.

Second vote for 6-sided sockets.

Another trick someone told me is to get a small hammer and a punch and spend 5-10 minutes just tapping away at the end of the stud. The aim isn't to really whack it, but to spend the time tapping away on it which ever-so slightly works away at the threads and breaks the corrosion.
