Teal the Canal Boat used to travelling at 60mph!

I put up a couple of pictures of Teal on News 24 last Saturday while I was waiting to see if I could get a new trailer tyre and had a few questions.

So here goes lets hope I cover some questions:

  • Teal is a Wilderness boat and her model is Beaver 23 first available in the early 1980s and still available new today. Teal was launched in 1989. She has a 9.9hp Honda outboard and Beavers are recommended to go for 15 hp for river use. She sleeps 4 with a fit out like an old fashion caravan. She is flat bottomed and designed to fit British narrow canals.
  • She weighs 2 tons on her trailer but on the back of a 2.6 ton Range Rover she tows easily cruising at 60 mph even up Shap, only catching a bit of lorry wash now and then.
  • The furthest we have taken her is Scotland for the 10th anniversary of the reopening of the Forth & Clyde canal and travelled on to Edinburgh via the Millennium Wheel.
  • She has to be MOTed every 4 years and has a 30 day explorer license for £115 which can be used as needed.
  • We have had her nearly 5 Years.

She was invited to be the first boat on the newly watered first section of the Buckingham canal being restored and John Bercow opened the canal from Teal but before the water when in we had fun testing the ramp.

Now with new trailer tyres Mrs Cyl is going to take it to the Lancaster canal tomorrow while I work! Well Friday on is Shitefest!

I'll keep an eye out then, I often walk the stretch between Keer Aquaduct (132) and Borwick bridge and I am off all week.

Honda engined. Much more reliable than Rover engined thinboatcaravans.

Excellent!

I like the Run DMC t-shirt.  Somehow I don't think the Speaker of the House of Commons opening the Buckingham canal from a narrow boat is what Jam Master Jay had in mind, although he'd probably have given you RESPECT for the Range Rover.

In the 1970s Wilderness boats 18 1/2 ft were tow my mid sized cars!

Mrs Cyl has now driven to Garstang and launched the boat safely with the help of Wilderness club members.

Been alerted to the rough location so I'll see if I can spy this tomorrow - Im up at my caravan ( not far from bridge 132) but sadly its in the arse end of mobile reception ( I get 2G coverage on O2 and Vodafone, none on the others) and site interweb is 2meg shared with the whole fecking site - so I have to wait till all the old giffers have gone to bed before  can go on the interweb.

Walked from Capernwray (131) up through Borwick (136 & 7)  and to the Tewitfield locks/marina but didnt have any luck - though there was something similar moored up at the terminus it didnt look like Teal.

I did join geocach but have never looked for anything with them.

Shame you did not find Mrs cyl but I think she had a good time even with diesel in the petrol incident!
