Solent Shiters - Summer-boat-tacular?

After the raging success of my hijacked Solent Shiters meet, on top of a hill in a hurricane in February I wondered if there is any appetite for a second meeting. In the summer. Not on a hill.

Now, on the weekend of the 11th and 12th July the P1 powerboats are going to be racing at Stokes Bay, Gosport - The event is free to attend since you basically sit on the beach and watch them race round in front of you. There are entertainments laid on as well, plus food and stuff, or bring a barbeque. I went last year on the Sunday and it was quite fun. Might be interesting for others too?

There are myriad car parks which don't charge any extra on the day, so you're looking at <£4 for a couple of hours parking and an ice cream, live action entertainment, and potential to meet other shiters.

Is there any appetite for this? I'll be there anyway, but wondered if anyone else fancied joining in. If there are a few I could even co-ordinate an AS BBQ (stolen shopping trolley parked over a burning pan of sump oil) on the beach.

The weather was good last year.

Just gauging interest currently, 'tis just an idea for now.

sounds interesting (certainly compared to trying to keep body temp above critical on Portsdown Hill) but I will have to check with 'er indoors and the Plan of Destiny....

I am returning to the North at the weekend so can't come. I can say, however, that Stokes Bay is very nice and would be great for a meet.

Less chance of getting shot there too....

I no longer live down South so I won't be going! But Gosport? *shudders*

A gentle nudge to drag the idea back to the surface of the bubbling pool of collective consciousness.

Provisional plan to meet at PO12 2BL, or there abouts at 13:00 on the 12th July? It goes on until the early evening if people want to stay that long. If this:

Is to be believed then there are several races over the afternoon interspersed with aquatic entertainment. There is a decent sized car park which was far from full last year, it was about £3 for 3 hours last time I was down there IIRC.

The music thing is optional, didn't bother looking at ticket prices, I think it goes on afterwards. I won't be bothering! The main event is free though.

I'll bring a couple of disposable barbeques and nibbles and drinks to keep morale up.

Another bump for this as it is now a week away. I'll be going anyway but if there is some interest on here I'll get a couple of disposable barbeques and some meat and bread to make it a bit more fun.

Any interest?

I'll get in a few burgers and sausages and some fizzy pop then, plus some buns. Bring a deckchair or similar as the beach* is all stones so not hugely comfortable. Oh and some binoculars too.

Final bump back to the top - aim to convene in the carpark for 13:00 ish? I'll be in the Almera and I think I recall what both Nigel and Doobie look like from last time. What fine steeds will you be bringing so I can hover nearby and look suspicious?

Bread, Fire and Meat have been procured, along with some bit and bobs to liven them up a bit.

Any other takers?

Oh, the musical treat afterwards is now free as the main act pulled out, presumably due to dismal ticket sales. If you want to see a few people I've never heard of you can now do so from 4pm for no capital outlay (other than paying a couple of quid to park).

Yeah, totally should have gone yesterday afternoon instead! I'm regretting that decision now! Hey ho, I bet I won't have trouble finding somewhere to sit this afternoon

I'm not going to bother organising another meet, the weather goes to shit every time! :-D

Well, you guys didn't miss anything. It was like February was, except with rain. And a tired, bored 5-year old, confined to a car as it was "too cold outside daddy".

Highlight was watching the jetskis being tossed about like matchsticks in the swell, a couple of riders will have warmed their respective wetsuits up with browness I suspect, and that was the stuff close to shore - I doubt it was any etter further out in the Solent.

As expected, beach space was not an issue. There were a few people still sticking it out but the funfair packed up shop about 2pm and I suspect the music won't go ahead later either.

I should have gone yesterday when it was less windy, 10 celcius warmer, sunny and dry.

3/10 could do better.

Completely forgot about this til I saw a sign for it on the way home tonight. P1 Powerboats at Stokes bay this weekend. I'll be heading down there on Sunday if anyone else is remotely interested? Its free, but car park is P&D so bring a couple of quid in change to feed the meter.

I think things start at about lunchtime.

Well resuscitated!    I vaguely remember not being able to do this last year and sure enough I shall again be deep in the tangled forest whacking moths and spiders in the Portafold with a rolled-up 1956 copy of Practical Motorist.

Yessir, I know how to live....

Weather doesn't look too bad, though.
