Odd insurance question

Recommended Posts

I recently reinsured one of my crocks of shit in the vain hope that I might one day get it back into a useable condition, and amongst the other 200 questions, they asked if I was a member of any car club or Internet forum.

Why would they want to know that for any other possible reason than snooping on the web for evidence to get them out of a claim?

I suppose there are those stupid enough to post about doing 100 into a blind bend whilst on the phone but claiming a dog ran out in front of them.

Incidentally their website lists car forums, and this isn't one of them.

I suppose a lot of car clubs are sort of outdated. The Imp Club website had to make some of the areas club member only a few years ago as people were not joining the club anymore as everything was on the website. Loads of people got in a huff but I thought it was fair enough as they need to sustain themselves.

I can see that as a member of a recognised forum you may well be seen as being a member of a club but, as you allude to its not hard to simply join a website for nowt and get an insurance discount if thats why they are asking.

I doubt its to snoop, therefore, it probably the idea of some young manager promoted before he has the experience to do the job properly, who has not really thought things through.

Some offer a discount if you are, as it shows you to be a more careful owner perhaps?

They can find stuff anyway. I once posted pictures on Barryboys of a Hyundai I found, totally wank bodykit. The owner then signed up to kick off because the insurance company had written to him with evidence of undeclared mods and asked for more money. "Ooops".

I doubt very much that they are likely to be offering careful diligent owner discounts on the basis that you are a member of Piston Heads.

Most people on Pistonheads believe they should have discount for being on Pistonheads though, as they are a higher class of being.

Anybody who fits a body kit to a Hyundai deserves to be bent over, looks like the insurance company assisted in this. For once an insurance company making a positive contribution for a change.
