Junkman Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Today, a trip was made to Stoke, for the pre-1980 Classic Banger Stan Woods Celebration Trophy. In attendance were 109 Unders and 59 Unlimiteds. Some people even brought proper cars:Some didn't:Some used Russian Ladas:Some used English ones:OMGSCENETAX was paid by some:But not by others:A novel air braking system was tried:Adolf would not have been amused:There was an A Manta (I've seen rustier examples at the nationals):A bunch of Farinas:Even a French one:Trummies:A Maxi:Yanks (the '60 Buick was running its original Nailhead 364):What was left of a Daimler DE18, which was lingering in a scrapyard since 1975:The remains of a Jaguar Mark Something or Other:The inevitable Rolls Royce:And in case you wondered where all the r00tz gr00p chod went, it was all here today. Honestly, there was an astonishing contingency present.I haven't seen that many on the road during the past decade. And last, but no least, a Waltzlee:There was more, of course. A lot more. But I was busy watching them being smashed to smithereens. fordperv, scruff, Charlie Croker and 6 others 9

fordperv Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 I wish I'd gone along to this, saw the 2 allegro's on their way on the a34, i didn't know it was a pre 1980 meet until last night
AlabamaShrimp Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 I think I've said it before somewhere but you must be totally mad or have the biggest balls in the world to race* in something that rotten. That Daimler being an excellent example, have you got a pic of it after? Junkman and Charlie Croker 2
danthecapriman Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Sad to see all those classics destroyed but you can't save them all. To be fair most of them do look pretty rotten, the Daimler in particular, I bet it didn't last long either! On a lot of them you can see all the welded plating they've done to get them looking half decent for the race.I'll await someone to upload a vid on YouTube! Charlie Croker 1

To be fair most of them do look pretty rotten, the Daimler in particular, I bet it didn't last long either! No, it didn't - one of the P6s took care of it pretty sharpish, shunting it into the wall. The thing was amazingly rotten. This is fairly typical level of rust on these cars. I think this A35 needed some attention to its spring hangers. Here's how the Chef Marina ended the night. The roof half collapsed the first time it was hit, just as everyone was hoping it would. Charlie Croker, Junkman, Shep Shepherd and 1 other 4
michael1703 Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 p6, famous for bolt on wings n sills must have had bits popping off it like a clown car
Charlie Croker Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 I think the banger boys get a lot of grief that they don't deserve. The cars that are raced are rotten for the most part and the work that can go into getting one fit for racing is unreal. Also anyone who loves cars and driving them would love to have a go at it (I would love to) even if they don't want to admit it. Great piccies by the way. danthecapriman, Junkman, scruff and 2 others 5

Some of the work and effort that goes into getting some cars ready to race is impressive. If anyone deserves grief it's the people who let these cars get into the sort of state a lot of them are in. Leaving them to rot and not looking after them.
wuvvum Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Interesting. I would've thought a P6 would be a bit rubbish for banger racing due to the front suspension setup.
Lankytim Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 P6's are rubbish for racing, the steering can get broken pretty easily. Old cars are very hard to get hold of now, so plenty of "dross" gets raced, which is great for variety. I was also at this meeting BTW!
Junkman Posted April 26, 2015 Author Posted April 26, 2015 Due to its front suspension, the P6 is ideally suited for racing. The steering is what breaks last, because it's mounted to the bulkhead. The P6es were also by far the best handling cars yesterday.
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Those cars were clearly all rubbish beyond realistically saving. As long as solid saveable cars aren't bangered, fair play. The A55 Mark 11 tow car deserves respect. eddyramrod 1
Junkman Posted April 26, 2015 Author Posted April 26, 2015 We did look inside many of the cars and pretty much all of them were beyond anything I'd take on as a resto project. Add to this that the lower five inches of most outer panels consisted of newspaper and plaster of Paris, with the exception of a couple of the P6's, which had better passenger doors than mine. There were only two cars I found a tad too straight for racing, the red Humber Super Snipe and a Farina, which didn't have a trace of rust. The '69 Caddy would probably have been salvageable too, but donated its drivetrain and interior for another one. It was run with a Ford V6. As I said before, the number of Rootes cars was astonishing and my pictures don't really reflect this. With strangely absolutely zero collectors interest in these cars, they inevitably will be banger fodder until supplies are depleted completely or I start buying them (I don't know another idiot who actually likes Rootes stuff). fotorabia 1
danthecapriman Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 I like Rootes stuff! I'd love a Humber Hawk or Super Snipe but they just don't seem to exist anymore. I'd like an Avenger too... eddyramrod 1
AnthonyG Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 How does a Lada Samara count as pre1979? They have no relation to the Fiat based cars.
